When Nature Calls: Big Maple Lake Comfort Station Dedication!

Last week, we decided to have a little fun while proudly dedicating the new restroom at Deep River County Park.

This vital addition to the Big Maple Lake section of the park was funded through a generous, heartfelt donation from longtime resident and dedicated park advocate, Bill Modrak. Sadly, Mr. Modrak passed away before the restroom could be officially opened, but we were incredibly honored to have his family join us for the "ribbon" cutting. And yes—that is toilet paper you see!

The celebration didn't stop there. Following the ceremony, attendees enjoyed some perfectly on-theme refreshments—lemonade and brownies—generously donated by the Strack & Van Til in Hobart. Then children joined our park naturalist for a hilarious and educational storytime exploring the "fascinating" world of s**t (wildlife p**p).

It might seem a little silly to throw a party for a restroom, but we believe in celebrating every aspect of what makes our parks welcoming and the hard work staff put into our parks. Most importantly, we wanted to showcase the incredible impact that a single dedicated resident can have on a community.

Thank you to the Modrak family, Strack & Van Til, and everyone who came out to celebrate with us.

Ticks are a growing reality across the Midwest, including parks, trails, neighborhoods, and even your own backyard. The good news is that a few simple precautions go a long way toward reducing risk. When spending time outside and visiting your parks be sure to stick to trails, wear repellant, dress appropriately, and do a quick tick check after you’re done exploring.

Don’t let this keep you from enjoying the outdoors. Here's more information on these pesky critters from the Purdue Extension:https://extension.entm.purdue.edu/publications/E-243.pdf

This Memorial Day at 2:30 PM, the most reverent of services returns to Stoney Run County Park.
We are honored to welcome the Indiana Fallen Heroes Project, Operation Charlie Bravo, Honor Flight Chicago, Congressman Mrvan, the Northwest Indiana Patriot Guard, the Lowell Sea Cadets, the Wolfgang Choir, Scouting America Troop 45, and our very own Marine veteran, Bishop Lewis.
This service truly embodies the solemn meaning of Memorial Day, honoring both the Veterans we have lost and those joining us in remembrance. You are both invited and welcome to attend.

Don't forget to join us this Thursday, May 21 at 10:00 AM for the official Big Maple Lake Comfort Station Dedication at Deep River County Park.

We aren't doing just any old ribbon cutting. PLUS-Hobart Strack’s has donated some on theme refreshments. Also, immediately following the dedication, we have a children’s program all about s**t. This is going to be a truly unique celebration, you won’t want to miss!

In honor of our brand-new restrooms... check out this link for some fantastic toilet paper roll crafts. These are such a fun way to keep the kids busy and celebrate the warmer spring weather.

You’re Invited: To a "Potty" in the Park!

We are just 1 week away from the Big Maple Lake Comfort Station Dedication on Thursday, May 21 at 10am.

At Lake County Parks, we believe every milestone is worth celebrating—even the ones that are a little silly. Forget the traditional ribbon cutting —we’re keeping it on theme with a ceremonial "toilet paper" ribbon cutting!

Following the short dedication ceremony, our park naturalist will lead a special reading of the children’s book "Whose P**p is That?" This is a chance for kids (and curious adults!) to learn how to identify the various types of s**ts found throughout our parks. It’s nature’s greatest detective game!

A huge thank you to Strack & Van Til in Hobart for joining the fun! They will be supplying themed refreshments for the event. They have earned some real "brownie" points for donating these snacks—you won't want to miss them!

We hope to see you all there at the Big Maple Lake section of Deep River County Park located at 7302 Ainsworth Road, Hobart, IN 46342.
