Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Our Training Expert, Heather Brown.

We are proud to spotlight one of our incredible volunteers, whose dedication to dogs and their people goes far beyond the shelter walls.

She is an AKC Certified Evaluator, a member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA), and an Atlas Assistance Dogs Certified Trainer. These certifications require ongoing continuing education, reflecting her commitment to staying current, informed, and effective in her work.

Her journey into dog training began after seeing firsthand how the right training can truly change a dog’s life. Her approach is built on trust, confidence, and clear communication between dogs and their people.

With 11 years of professional training experience, she has worked with dogs of all breeds, ages, and abilities. She completed a four-month internship with Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, later became a mentor trainer, and eventually launched her own business, Barks and Rec, where she offers both virtual and in-person training.

Her work includes basic manners, foundation skills, and behavioral challenges, with a special focus on fear-based behaviors. She is now expanding her work into service dog training.

In addition, she is starting a nonprofit called Freya’s Warriors, which will focus on training PTSD service dogs for veterans.

We are grateful for her knowledge, compassion, and dedication to helping dogs become more confident, connected, and understood.

Events like these not only raise much-needed financial support for our shelter animals but also help strengthen the incredible community that stands behind them.

We are so grateful for your generosity, partnership, and commitment to helping homeless pets in our care. Your support means the world to us—and to the dogs and cats who call our shelter home. ❤️

🎉 Elvis Has Taken His Freedom Ride... and Headed Home! 🐾❤️

If you follow our shelter, chances are you're a big fan of Elvis. This handsome boy captured the hearts of so many staff, volunteers, and supporters during his time with us, and we're thrilled to share that he has found his forever family!

Elvis is lucky that he will have a canine sibling to share adventures, make memories, and enjoy life alongside. Knowing that he has a loving family and a canine companion makes us incredibly excited for his future.

While we will miss seeing his sweet face at the shelter, nothing makes us happier than watching a dog so loved by our shelter community get the happy ending they deserve.

Congratulations, Elvis! We can't wait to watch your next chapter unfold. Thank you to your wonderful family for giving this special boy the loving home he's been waiting for. ❤️🐶🏡

There is nothing we love more than receiving happy updates about recently adopted animals, and Junie—now lovingly known as Junebug—is absolutely thriving in her new home!

Junebug has embraced her new life with enthusiasm, spending her days hiking trails, exploring the creek, chasing butterflies, and soaking up all the love she can get. Perhaps the sweetest part of her story is the special bond she shares with her 12-year-old friend, Ella. As a first-time dog owner, Ella has truly stepped up to the plate, and the two have become completely inseparable. Their friendship is a beautiful reminder of the incredible connections that can form when a shelter pet finds the right family.

We couldn't be happier for Junebug and Ella and are so grateful they found each other. Wishing them many more adventures, butterfly chases, and happy memories together! ❤️🐾

A huge thank you to Kate, and the Allegany County Library System, for inviting us to be part of this evening's Summer Kickoff event! We had such a wonderful time meeting so many enthusiastic young readers and animal lovers!

One of the biggest stars of the event was Luna, who quickly captured the hearts of every person she met. She adores children, making her the perfect ambassador for events like this. She also gets along well with both dogs and cats and is currently available for adoption.

There truly is nothing better than books and dogs going hand in hand. We are grateful for opportunities like this to connect with our community, promote literacy, and help wonderful dogs like Luna find loving homes.
