Reminder! From September 1-4, all 6th-grade students will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT), and from September 2-4, all 1st- and 3rd-grade students will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Unlike traditional achievement tests, which measure how well a student has learned the curriculum, the CogAT assesses a child’s ability to reason abstractly and recognize patterns and relationships in the world around them. Teachers can use CogAT scores to better understand a child’s pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses. Our school district also uses CogAT scores to screen for cognitively gifted students.

This morning, DHS held its first pep rally of the school year in preparation for the Varsity football game against Stephenson this evening at 7:00 p.m. The gym was filled with school spirit thanks to special performances by the DHS Band, Colorguard, Varsity and JV Cheerleaders, and the debut of the Decatur Diamonds Dance Team. Students competed in grade-level games and shout-outs. After playing a series of Roshambo (Rock, Paper, Scissors), DHS junior Trini Romero clinched the win against Dr. Sprull, for the Class of 2028! Special recognition to Amanda Lockhart and the Student Government Association (SGA) for planning and organizing this schoolwide event. Let's go, Bulldogs!

CSD invites your participation in a Pre-K survey. School principals recommended parents from their respective schools to participate in a working group to assist CSD in determining how best to engage with families, staff, and the broader community to inform decisions about Pre-K families' priorities in Decatur, including potential locations, transportation, and changing community needs. This survey is the committee's first community outreach, inviting all families and community members to participate, regardless of their children's ages.

Survey results will be shared, along with community insights and project updates, on the Pre-K Access Project webpage at: https://decatur.app.convoca.org. The data will result in a recommendation to the Board of Education at the December board meeting.
The survey is open through September 16 and is available here: https://linktr.ee/cityschoolsofdecatur, under Stakeholder Feedback and Surveys.

In art this morning, the Clairemont Bulldogs broadened their knowledge of lines by creating crowns with chenille stems. In music, they used their listening skills to follow a call-and-response drumming pattern.

At Oakhurst, the Owls engaged in math activities by recognizing numbers and quantities using Play-Doh and counters. Kudos to the Clairemont and Oakhurst students and teachers for your great work!

OAK: Yolanda Kemp, Sophia Wilder, Kendria Paden and Kimberly White

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools your child has to succeed in school, PE, and sports. When students get enough quality sleep, their bodies and brains are ready to learn, move, focus, and perform at their best.

Why sleep matters:
➡ Sleep helps with memory, attention, problem-solving, and test performance in school.
➡ Sleep improves speed, strength, endurance, coordination, and reaction time in PE and sports. It also helps reduce the risk of injury and supports muscle recovery.
➡ Good sleep supports a strong immune system, a healthy mood, and better stress management.

If you have questions or need resources, please reach out to your school health team or your child's PE teachers. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's health and success.
