Last week, the ASCP Faculty and Staff Coalition had the exciting opportunity to get a tour of CVA’s current exhibition: Sequesterings!

It was inspiring to see disposable objects transformed into works of art, and we encourage you to go and see it if you have the chance! 🗑️♻️🎨

🔥A student on the Auraria Campus asked, “Why should I sort my waste on campus? I’ve heard it all goes to landfill anyway.”

🪱 ASCP Compost Student Associates collect and sort compost bins across campus weekly.

♻️ Recyclable materials from the Auraria Campus are sorted at a material recovery facility (MRF).

This spring, the Auraria Sustainable Campus Program put in the work, literally sorting through waste!

Thanks to a $50,000 grant from C3 (Circular Colorado Communities Enterprise), we launched a comprehensive waste characterization study across campus in partnership with Diversion Designers. During the spring semester, our team collected and sorted 8,000 lbs of waste and recycling samples into 57 distinct material categories!

The findings from this study will help us:

→ Identify cost savings in waste hauling
→ Uncover opportunities for new recycling programs
→ Strengthen outreach and education around waste diversion

Scroll through our photos to see the process of collecting, hauling, and sorting waste. We’ll be back at it this fall for a second round of sampling and sorting, and we look forward to sharing what we find!
