What started as a parenting class became something much more. 💙 At Catholic Charities Samaritan House, five moms came together for a six-week parenting program led by onsite therapist Jessica. Through weekly lessons, honest conversations and shared experiences, they gained valuable parenting tools—but perhaps even more importantly, they found community.
“It built a community,” participant Kara shared. “Before the class, if I saw another mom sitting by herself in the cafeteria, I probably would’ve just walked by. Now we sit together. We check on each other.” Since 1986, Samaritan House has provided shelter, support and hope to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Programs like this parenting cohort help strengthen families, build connections and remind parents that they don’t have to navigate life’s challenges alone. For more than 20 years, Jim has faithfully volunteered at Catholic Charities Samaritan House, serving residents with kindness, compassion and a welcoming smile. 💙 Twice each week, Jim helps process mail, assists residents and supports the day-to-day operations of the shelter. But for Jim, volunteering is about more than completing tasks—it’s about building relationships, listening to people’s stories and helping others during difficult times. At Catholic Charities, volunteers like Jim are at the heart of our mission. Each year, more than 58,000 volunteer hours are dedicated across our ministries, helping us serve thousands of individuals and families throughout our community. Jim’s commitment is a powerful example of how volunteers make a lasting difference and help us continue providing hope, support and compassionate care to those we serve. Since opening in 1986, Samaritan House has been part of the Colorado community, providing shelter, support and care for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. At Catholic Charities Samaritan House, a former room tucked behind the women’s singles dorm has been transformed into a beautiful Mother’s Room—a peaceful, welcoming space where mothers can care for, feed and bond with their babies in comfort and privacy. This inspiring project was led by Macy, a parishioner at Our Lady of Lourdes and member of the Denver Home Builders Association, whose vision and dedication brought the space to life. We are deeply grateful to the many partners, donors and volunteers who made this transformation possible, including the Denver Home Builders Association, Kimberly Timmons Interiors, Phoenix Drywall, Sherwin-Williams and the many industry and community partners who generously contributed their time, talents and resources. Together, they created more than a room—they created a place of dignity, hope and support for the mothers and babies we serve at Samaritan House. For more than 40 years, Catholic Charities Samaritan House has provided shelter, stability and support to women, children, families and veterans experiencing homelessness. What began with one Samaritan House shelter in Denver has expanded to five locations across Colorado, serving thousands of individuals and families each year. After serving our country, Navy veteran Paul faced a new challenge: rebuilding his life after serious heart surgery. When Paul moved into Catholic Charities Housing’s Courtyard Commons, he found the support and stability he needed to focus on healing and rebuilding his life. Courtyard Commons is a housing community for veterans and seniors. “This place changed my life,” Paul says. Today, Paul is thriving in a supportive community where fellow veterans understand the unique challenges that can come after military service. His story is a powerful reminder that safe, affordable housing can be life-changing for those who have served our nation. Catholic Charities Housing operates 31 affordable housing properties, providing homes for more than 2,850 residents throughout Colorado. Ray’s story is one of courage, perseverance and hope. A decorated Vietnam veteran, Ray served our country with honor, earning some of the military’s highest awards. But when he returned home, he faced challenges that many veterans know all too well — trauma, homelessness and the difficult journey of rebuilding stability. Everything changed when he connected with Catholic Charities Samaritan House. This year, Samaritan House celebrates 40 years of serving our Colorado community, providing shelter, support and a path forward for individuals experiencing homelessness. 99% of Client Services and Veterans Program participants do not return to shelter once they leave Samaritan House. With support, community and a place to call home, Ray was able to rebuild his life, find lasting friendships and become a mentor to fellow veterans. Today, Ray lives at Catholic Charities Housing’s Courtyard Commons, an affordable housing community for veterans and seniors. Courtyard Commons is one of 31 affordable housing properties operated by Catholic Charities Housing across Colorado, providing stable homes where individuals and families can thrive. After everything he has endured—war, trauma, loss and hardship—Ray is grateful to have a place that feels like home. We are grateful to call him our neighbor. 🇺🇸💙
