Workshop Description: Join UMaine Extension’s Farm and Tractor Safety Team at the UMaine Rogers Farm in Old Town for a hands-on tractor workshop in a supportive, low-pressure environment to build real confidence behind the wheel. We will practice key safety protocols; equipment basics; starting, stopping, steering, and operating a tractor around obstacles; and interactive activities to reinforce safety concepts and equipment hitching methods. Our goal is to remove the intimidation factor from tractor operation. Guided by patient instructors, you'll practice core skills at a comfortable pace alongside peers who are also starting fresh. You will leave with the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience needed to tackle farm tasks safely and independently. Light refreshments will be provided.

Audience: This program is designed specifically for new, hesitant, or aspiring operators. Participants must be 14 years old or older to drive the tractor. An assumption of risk document must be completed by the participant or a guardian prior to participation.

Garden Fest Returns to Rogers Farm! 🌻

Bring the family and spend a fall morning exploring the gardens at UMaine Extension’s annual Rogers Farm Demonstration Garden Fest and Fun Run!

Visitors can explore more than 30 themed gardens and enjoy hands-on activities, tastings, art in the garden, veggie vehicle races and more. You can also learn about pollinator-friendly gardening, seasonal eating, soil testing and cover crops.

🌈 A rainbow-themed fun run for children ages 12 and younger begins at 11 a.m., with a chance to make a wand or banner beforehand.

Explore the Story of Maine-Grown Flowers 🌸

Join UMaine Extension assistant professor Ankit Singh at the Maine Maritime Museum for an evening exploring the history and future of flower farming in Maine.

Through stories and photographs from growers across the state, Singh will share the seasonal rhythms, opportunities and challenges that shape Maine’s flower farms, from weather and labor to markets and community connections.

The evening also includes a guided tour of flower installations with the designers.

4-H Super Sitters Virtual Series

Learn the basics of babysitting through our introductory 4-H Super Sitters Virtual Series! 4-H staff will introduce interested teens to the basics of babysitting – what questions to ask families, how to hold a baby and change a diaper, and the developmental stages of children. This workshop is targeted for youth ages 11-18, with a maximum of 12 youth participants. The last session, December 1, will be a hybrid model, with in-person location(s) to be determined.

🐑🐐 Small Ruminant Parasite Management Intensive

Are parasites causing problems in your flock or herd, or do you want to be better prepared to identify and manage them?

Join us for a hands-on workshop designed for sheep, goat, llama, and alpaca producers! Learn about common internal parasites, including lungworms and the often deadly meningeal worm, and gain practical experience with parasite management tools. Build your confidence in making evidence-based parasite management decisions to improve the health and productivity of your animals!

🔬 Participants will practice:
• Performing f***l egg counts using a microscope
• Using the FAMACHA protocol to assess anemia and barber pole worm risk
• Setting up a diagnostic tool for lungworm detection
• Identifying signs of parasitic disease
• Developing targeted treatment and pasture management strategies

Participants will become FAMACHA-certified and will take home a DIY Baermann apparatus. Farmers are encouraged to bring a fresh f***l sample from one animal to examine. Lunch is provided!
