Forecasts that are calling for hotter-than-normal temperatures have placed eastern Idaho and western Wyoming “in the bullseye” for above-normal wildfire potential heading into July and August.

TCFR has sent an Engine to assist Madison Fire Department with an emerging incident. This is an example of our robust mutual aid system in SE Idaho. No one organization has enough resources for large incidents so we rely on our neighbors.

This week is National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. Did you know that of the 1,200 emergency calls that TCFR responds to annually, 68% are EMS calls? In addition, each year we transport approximately 250 patients from Teton Valley Health to a higher level of care out of the Valley, sometimes as far away as Salt Lake City. Each member is either an EMT or a Paramedic licensed in both Idaho and Wyoming. This week our leadership team pauses to honor our men and women for their commitment to service in Teton Valley in the delivery of EMS!

Lesson #2: at approximately 4:38 this afternoon, TCFR responded to a report of a grass fire in a subdivision north of Driggs. Upon arrival, workers had attempted to burn cardboard near an old burn pile. The winds has spread the fire to adjacent grasses and, well you know what happens from here. The same 7 firefighters from lesson #1 were able to catch the fire before reaching adjacent homes. There was no activated burn permit with this incident. We’d like to encourage folks to fully extinguish burn piles and continue to monitor for several days especially on dry/windy days that follow and follow the burn permitting process. It’s gonna be a long summer. Stay safe, friends!

At around 11:20am, TCFR was dispatched to a report of a fast moving grass fire near S. Bates and HY33 on the outskirts of Driggs. Simultaneously, we received an alert from the two PANO AI cameras atop Fred’s Mtn. and Relay Ridge. The cameras triangulated and provided a lat and long confirming the location. Crews (7 firefighters) arrived within minutes to knock down the forward progress. It was determined the fire was started by juveniles shooting off fireworks. Couple takeaways…tell your kids fireworks are bad on dry/windy days, early detection wildfire cameras work, calling 911 right away is a good thing, and it is still really dry and we all need to be smart this summer when working or playing outdoors. Last thing is when we only have 6-7 firefighters to protect 450 square miles and 14,000 residents…we need people to use common sense, be safe and help us help you.

The Caribou-Targhee National Forest is proud to recognize Jon Carnill, who received the Ember Vanguard Award for his initiative and innovation in wildfire prevention across the Great Basin.

Jon’s work goes beyond day-to-day responsibilities—supporting peers, contributing ideas, and helping strengthen prevention efforts at both the local and regional level. His leadership and creativity continue to make a lasting impact.

This recognition also reflects the broader work happening across the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. The forest was honored with the Ember Excellence Award for wildfire prevention and mitigation, highlighting strong partnerships, outreach, and program growth driven by a small but dedicated team.

Wildfire prevention is a shared responsibility. As you head out to the forest, follow posted signage, stay aware of conditions, and make sure your campfire is completely out.
