119 Days Later… Who’s Next?

On February 1st, four abandoned dogs came through our doors together.

One of them was a youngster named King. King was mouthy. Unsure. A little rough around the edges. Truth is, he had been passed around enough that he didn't really know who to trust or how he was supposed to act. But something happened in playgroup. He watched. He learned. He took correction from other dogs. He learned that people could be trusted. And eventually, King went home with a wonderful family and children of his own.

That leaves three- Chile. Tracker. Knox.

Look closely...

See that little pink nose? That isn't sunburn. Jenna is a pitty that actually looks like she's blushing when she's excited to see you.

And that tail? Consider yourself warned. This girl's tail wag has enough horsepower to clear a coffee table and leave a bruise on your thigh. She doesn't just greet people—she celebrates them.

Jenna is the kind of dog that wakes up happy, stays happy, and believes every person she meets might be her new best friend. Her smile is real, her heart is huge, and her enthusiasm for life is absolutely contagious.

If your home could use a little more laughter, a little more love, and a whole lot of tail-wagging happiness, Jenna is ready to move in.

Come meet the pitty that blushes.

Jenna is available for adoption at East Ridge Animal Services.

Foxglove wasn't so sure about people.

At 5 years old, this handsome tabby arrived with a healthy dose of skepticism and a belief that humans might be best admired from a distance. But day by day, meal by meal, gentle hand by gentle hand, Foxglove started to change his mind.

Now, 87 days later, he's discovered that people are actually pretty nice.

He enjoys attention, appreciates a cozy bed, and has traded suspicion for curiosity. He's still got that independent cat charm, but underneath it is a sweet soul that's ready for a family of his own.

Foxglove has done the hard part. He learned to trust.

Now all he needs is someone willing to give him the home he's waited 87 days to find.

Come meet Foxglove. We think he'll change your mind about shelter cats, too.

Sunday Thankful: Nikki's Story

A few months ago, Nikki wouldn't have been caught dead on a couch.

This beautiful Great Pyrenees came to us scared of the world. Every sound was suspicious. Every new person was terrifying. She preferred to stay invisible, tucked away where she felt safe. Trust didn't come easy for Nikki.

But today?

Today she's stretched out on a soft couch, guarding her favorite toy, surrounded by people who love her.

That's the thing about shelter dogs. Sometimes they don't need fixing. They just need time. They need patience. They need someone willing to see who they can become instead of who they are on their worst day.

This Sunday, we're thankful for families who take a chance on the shy ones. The overlooked ones. The dogs that don't run to the front of the kennel demanding attention.

Because every once in a while, a dog like Nikki reminds us why we do this.

From scared and uncertain...to safe, loved, and home.

That's a pretty good Sunday.

❤️🐾

There are lots of ways dogs end up in shelters, but one of the most common is an owner surrender. That’s how Koda came to us.

Imagine it from her perspective.

Your family loads you into the car and you’re excited because car rides usually mean something good. Maybe a trip to the park. Maybe a pup cup. Maybe just tagging along because you’re part of the family.

Then you pull into a place you’ve been before.

It smells familiar.

The vet.

You hate the vet.

But this time feels different.

Your people seem nervous. Maybe a little sad.

They go inside. They come back out. They grab your leash.

You notice they brought a bag.

Your blanket.

Your toys.

Your food.

You don’t understand.

Are they going somewhere?

How long will they be gone?

When are they coming back?

A stranger takes your leash.

Your family walks away.

You wait for them to turn around.

They don’t.

Days pass.

The food tastes different.

The dogs next door bark all night.

You don’t know the rules.

You don’t know the people.

You don’t know why you’re here.

Sometimes someone stops at your kennel and talks to you.

Sometimes nobody does.

Sometimes you get to go outside and feel the grass under your feet.

Sometimes you don’t understand why today isn’t your turn yet.

You start to memorize faces.

You learn which staff members speak softly.

Which volunteers sneak in extra belly rubs.

Which people make you feel safe.

At East Ridge, we’re fortunate. Our dogs have blankets. They have toys. They get time in play yards. They go on walks. They get love.

The sad reality is that not every shelter dog gets those things.

But even with all of that, it still isn’t home.

What these dogs need most isn’t another toy or another treat.

They need someone to look them in the eye and tell them, “You didn’t do anything wrong.”

Because they didn’t.

They loved the people they were supposed to love.

They trusted the people they were supposed to trust.

And then one day those people were gone.

Every day we walk into those kennels and make the same promise.

We tell them it’s going to be okay.

We tell them somebody is going to fall in love with them.

We tell them there is a couch, a backyard, a family, and a future waiting somewhere.

We tell them they won’t have to stay here forever.

And then we do everything we can to make that promise come true.

Koda is still waiting for hers.
