Cooling off in the pool seems like a great way to spend this Thursday! See you soon at the El Paso Zoo! 🐺
🐷 Ginger, Juliana mini pig, has made great progress with her training staff! Here we have Carrie and Stephanie helping to target train Ginger with the help of some yummy snacks.
Let’s continue #zooworkerweek with our education team!
Caring for our animals as keepers means cleaning up their exhibits as well! Here our female Hooded crane Tiny Dancer (also lovingly called “T” by her keepers) decides to help her keeper clean off their rake while they take a break from raking leaves in her yard! She’s such a helpful little girl 💕🍂🍁
Nothing like a nice, cool bath to start off your day! Savannah is a little shy about letting people see her swim in her moat, so she often takes a dip in the early hours of the morning, before we arrive at the barn. Sometimes if we get to work early enough and are VERY very quiet, we can catch this sleepy girl snoozing under her waterfall! 😴🐘
Sometimes when your back end itches but you don’t have hands, you have to get a little creative! Vitalis thought his hay feeder did the job just fine; I mean, look at that face! 😂
Hoof maintenance is a crucial part of caring for our Przewalski’s horses, making sure their feet are always in tiptop shape! Our “P. horses” voluntarily enter their tamer and have their foot lifted onto a comfy stand while keepers clean, trim, and file their hooves, while also checking for any abnormalities. In these videos, keeper Abel works on our male Vitalis’ front left hoof while keeper Becca rewards him with grain and carrots for staying steady and participating! He is free to remove his foot and back out at any time, but cooperating with his keepers means extra treats!
How do you wash an elephant? With a firehose, of course! 💦 Here we have Keeper Abel giving Savannah a quick cool down during the heat of the afternoon. Although Savannah has access to multiple drinkers in her exhibit all day long, sometimes she’d rather drink straight from the hose instead! It always tastes better that way, right? 😉
It’s a hot one today in El Paso, so make sure you’re staying cool! ☀️ Our Malayan tapir Bailey knows how to beat the heat by going for a swim! 🏊♀️
Keeper Alex is weighing our Prevost’s Squirrel Walker.
Asia has taken over and we are weighing in! Here at the zoo, diet and maintaining proper body condition is very important to keep all animals feeling their best and to live long healthy lives! We weigh all species here from the small birds to the Orangutans. Stay tuned for more fun videos of a few animals being weighed!
Meet Walker, our Prevost’s Squirrel, he is 7 years old and weighs in at 396.5g, which is a healthy weight for such a little guy. Stop by our nocturnal exhibit to see him.
Here we have a scale training on our Mindanao Bleeding-heart Dove, Earl Grey, and our Nicobar pigeon, Nick, using operant conditioning. We get monthly weights on animals to help us determine the animals overall health! 🐦💚

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Flower certainly thinks so! Flower and her partner Vito are Prehensile-tailed Porcupines. They're nocturnal and are most active for the keepers in the early mornings. Come to the South American Pavilion and maybe you'll catch them snoozing 😴
