The goal of No Mow May is to allow lawns (especially flowering weeds) to grow unmown for the month of May, creating habitat and forage for early season pollinators. This is particularly important in urban areas where floral resources are often limited. 🌼🐝🌸

Missing Orangutan Mothers 2021 (M.O.M)

We've got some pretty special Moms here at the El Paso Zoo, but unfortunately, there are hundreds of orphaned orangutans who have been separated from their mothers that are being cared for in rescue centers in Borneo and Sumatra due to the threats to their habitats and family units.

Ibu and Khaleesi, our mother/daughter duo, have a very special bond, and because of that, we hope that highlighting their relationship will awaken public empathy for the crisis their species faces.

We want folks to expand their knowledge, take action and advocate for endangered species.

The message of M.O.M, shared rightly so on Mother's Day, and why we participate, is to draw attention to the issues orangutans face in the wild and encourage people to protect them.

Today is the first International Blue Iguana Day!

Did you know Grand Cayman blue iguanas — also called blue iguanas, Cayman Island blue iguanas or Grand Cayman iguanas - are large, heavy-bodied lizards with colors ranging from gray to bright blue? These reptiles are diurnal and will bask in the sun to warm up at the start of the day.

In 2002, between 10-25 blue iguanas remained in the wild. In 2013, there were 750.

The goal of today is to raise awareness surrounding the endangered species.

The International Reptile Conservation Foundation works year-round to support conservation, awareness, and educational efforts.

Here at the El Paso Zoo, you'll find our zookeepers doing the same by working with the community to teach them more about Rex (our Blue Iguana) and Fido (who is a Rhinoceros Iguana!), and you can help too!

You can find more on how to do exactly that, and more information on their species, at IRCF.org.

The El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens is saddened to report the death of the Galapagos Tortoise named Ralph.

The 120-year-old tortoise was diagnosed with an intestinal blockage earlier this year. Zoo Veterinarians confirmed that the blockage was caused by a malignant tumor, intestinal adenocarcinoma, through an initial procedure, which also partially relieved the obstruction and bought Ralph some more time.

After much discussion and consultation with other expert tortoise veterinarians, an aggressive surgical procedure was attempted as Ralph’s only chance for survival. While the surgery has been performed on smaller tortoises, it has not been attempted on a Galapagos tortoise. Unfortunately, Ralph did not survive the procedure and passed away while under anesthesia.

“We knew that Ralph had no other options and we did not enter into this procedure lightly. Despite our best efforts and an experienced team, it was just too much for Ralph’s debilitated system to survive,” said El Paso Zoo Chief Veterinarian Dr. Victoria Milne. “I know we did absolutely everything we could for him, but it is still so difficult to have this sad outcome. The whole team was devastated.”

Ralph first came to the El Paso Zoo in 2016 after transferring from the Phoenix Zoo as part of a species survival plan from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. He was a loyal companion to Mr. Potato Head, his fellow Galapagos Tortoise.

“We hate to lose any animal in our care, but it is often harder to watch them deteriorate and not be able to help them get better,” said El Paso Zoo Director Joe Montisano. “In Ralph’s case, the only option to save him was to attempt this high-risk surgery. Tortoises are not created to have ‘easy access’ for surgical purposes. Despite the best and valiant effort by our veterinary team Ralph did not make it.”

We will miss him dearly. 🐢

Today is World Tapir Day! You may have seen ours spend their days sunbathing, swimming, and snacking, but did you know Tapirs inhabit jungles, grasslands, swamps and cloud forests?

You might have noticed they look something like pigs with trunks too, but according to National Geographic, they are actually related to horses and rhinoceroses! Scientists believe that these guys have changed little over tens of millions of years. 😳

Unfortunately, all Tapirs are endangered species because each of their native habitats is threatened by mining, palm oil plantations, roads or settlements. For that reason, World Tapir Day exists to raise awareness about the species of tapir that inhabit Central and South America and Southeast Asia and to raise funds to purchase land to protect them.

You can read all about those efforts and help the cause by clicking this link 👉: https://www.tapirday.org/

Our California sea lions are conservation ambassadors reminding us of our connections to oceans. Most of the oxygen we need comes from tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton. Plastic pollution is killing ocean animals and tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics are everywhere. Scientists estimate that we consume from 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year. You can make a difference by avoiding single use plastics. 🚮
