Thank you everyone for joining us in celebrating and raising awareness of this iconic endangered species!

On Saturday, International Orangutan Day, we celebrated Dad Butch’s, 38-years old, and Mom Ibu’s, 32-years old, birthdays with great enrichment. They were all smiles!

The Zoo is home to four Sumatran orangutans – Parents Butch and Ibu, with their children 8-year old daughter Khaleesi and youngest 1-year old boy Zaine.

Help us protect orangutans and contribute to their conservation globally. Make a difference at https://redapes.org/

Join us tomorrow, August 19, in celebrating International Orangutan Day with an added bonus of birthday celebrations!

Ibu, mother of two, turned 32-years old a few weeks ago. While Dad, Butch, will be 38-years old tomorrow on International Orangutan Day. Both have two reasons to celebrate! Join in the fun in the morning hours and again during Orangutan Enrichment at 12:30 p.m.

Fun Fact: The name “orangutan” literally translates into English as “person of the forest”. It comes from Malay and Bahasa Indonesian orang (person) and hutan (forest).

Learn more about Butch and Ibu and ways to help their species at https://redapes.org/about-us/campaigns/international-orangutan-day/

Conservation success story!
Cotton-top Tamarins are one of the most critically endangered monkeys in the world with populations still in decline. There is estimated to be less than 6000 individuals left in the wild due to deforestation, illegal pet trade, and conflict with humans.
Here at the El Paso Zoo we participate in the SSP (species survival plan) for Cotton-tops. Our mating pair, Darren and Marquita, have successfully raised 3 sets of twins!
Come visit the proud parents and all 6 offspring in the zoo's South American Pavilion!

It's a party! Kade and her mate Khan celebrated her 19th birthday this week. Bali Myna or Bali Starlings are found in a small region of Bali, an island smaller than Rhode Island. These critically endangered birds are highly trafficked in the pet trade due to their beauty and the belief they are a symbol of wealth and status.

Started in 2014, Latino Conservation Week is an initiative of the Hispanic Access Foundation, an official National Park Service partner, to support the Latino community getting outdoors and participating in activities that protect our natural resources. Since its start, there have been hundreds of programs and special events nationwide to celebrate Latino heritage.

We continue the acknowledgement and appreciation we intend on spreading during Zoo Keeper Appreciation Week by calling attention to the start of Latino Conservation Week!

Spanning across all the departments, The El Paso Zoo proudly represents Latinos from different cultural backgrounds as part of its team.

The animal care field isn't easy. It's intensive, demanding, laborious, and can even, at times, be heart breaking. The animal care world is multifaceted and often asks those within to wear many different hats. All in the service of the animals we care for.

We see you, the work you put in. We see the passion and dedication it takes to lace up your boots every single day. The animals you care for most certainly feel the positive effect of all the effort put in to make their quality of life the best it can be.

This week kicks off an annual tradition, a week devoted to acknowledging the exceptional humans that make zoos as special as they are. Whose hard work preserves the precious species that call our facility home.

We ask our EPZ faithful to join us in thanking our staff and sharing in the admiration we have for them. There is no El Paso Zoo without you.

Staff allows Gigi and Obi to come and go on exhibit as they choose every Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00 to around 11:00, then dad, Juma, will make his appearance. Don't get rid of your leaf piles! 🍃🍂🍁

This is where many lay their eggs. If you rake up and throw away leaves, you may be throwing away baby insects and eggs of insects and pollinators that are important to us. 🐝 🐞 🪲🦋

Thank you to UTEP Biodiversity Collections and El Paso Zoo for your partnership in helping to generate awareness and support from our community at the event. 🎅 ❤️

It was so much fun showing families all of the critters and eggs that might be found in leaf piles. Seeing their faces light up during their discovery was magical! ✨️

🐘 IRENE SURGERY UPDATE! 🐘 Irene is awake and doing well! She had surgery today to remove her left eye and alleviate the pain associated with age-related lens luxation.

We are sending a heartfelt thank you for the incredible teamwork and efforts of the almost 50 professionals from many organizations and disciplines who came together to make this possible.

Irene is recovering now, and we will continue to monitor her over the next few days to ensure there are no complications following today’s successful surgery.

Thank you to everybody who helped in this amazing effort to help Irene including local and visiting veterinary specialists, a national expert in elephant anesthesia, a veterinary ophthalmologist, colleagues from the Denver Zoo, El Paso Zoo, Houston Zoo, Oregon Zoo, White Oak Conservation, Albuquerque Fire Rescue, Corrales Fire Department, and Rio Rancho Fire and Rescue. And of course, thank you to our own animal care, veterinary and facilities teams. We could not have done this without your tireless dedication and teamwork.
