The El Paso Zoo is mourning the passing of beloved 30-year-old Sun Bear, Heliana. She was euthanized due to an ongoing battle with cancer. Zoo staff had been keeping a close eye on Heliana when they noticed she was not behaving normally; she was lethargic and had not been eating well. Medical exams were conducted and revealed the cancer she was diagnosed with years ago and was being treated for, had spread throughout her body.

Medications were provided for her to keep her comfortable and the decision was made that the best course of action was to have her humanely euthanasia.

Heliana came to the El Paso Zoo in October 1995 from the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Maryland. She was one of the few original animals left in the Asia section of the zoo when it first opened to the public in 1997.

The median life expectancy of Sun Bears is 23 years old for females. Heliana’s longevity, living to 30 years old with cancer, is a reflection of the great care she received at the zoo,

She will be missed and the Zoo will hold all the beautiful moments and memories of her in their hearts.

We are excited to announce that a Rhinoceros is now part of the family at the El Paso Zoo. A 7-year-old greater one-horned rhino named Taj from the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington traveled in a custom-made crate inside a climate-controlled truck to its new home.

All Rhinos are in great jeopardy in the wild and we are very fortunate to get Taj as he is highly ranked in the breeding priority list. Eventually we will be bringing in a few females to join Taj and hopefully then adding new Rhinos to the population.

Taj means “crown” or “jewel” in Hindi, pronounced like Taj Mahal.

Taj will not be immediately available for public viewing until he gets acclimated to his surroundings and animal care specialists.

Would you like to “adopt” and care for a baby agave plant for one year?

The Zoo has partnered with the Bat Conservation International for the “Adopt an Agave” program to help provide much-needed nectar resources for the endangered Mexican long-nosed that calls Big Bend National Park home. And we need YOU!

El Paso Zoo is recruiting 100 volunteers to care a baby agave plant up to a year until they are ready for planting back in the wild.

You must be able to pick up your agave from the El Paso Zoo between November 27 – December 16, 2023.
