Dear Fayetteville City Council Members,

My name is Carrol Olinger as a community leader of our vibrant community and Community Organizer of Action NC, I regret that I am unable to attend tonight’s meeting.

However, I feel it is imperative to voice my concerns and concerns of your constituents regarding the proposed data center developments in Fayetteville.

Democracy in Action

This is what democracy looks like: a community actively engaged, advocating for the well-being of its residents. As you deliberate on these crucial matters, I urge you to listen to the voices of your constituents. Many residents are calling for a moratorium on the proposed data centers, citing overwhelming apprehension about the implications these facilities could have on our environment and quality of life.

Community Concerns

Local residents have expressed grave concerns regarding a ton of stuff!! Mostly we want to live longer and not have additional health risk because some of you cant wait to have a REAL moratorium.

Here is what we ALL know

Environmental Impact The potential heavy water consumption, air pollution, and increased utility bills that could arise from these facilities.

Public Health Risks The presence of PFAS chemicals in our water supply further compounds these worries. We cannot afford to add to the existing pollutants that threaten our health.

Noise and Disruption

The operational noise and disruptions associated with heavy industrial facilities could drastically alter the character of our community. May cause migraine headaches, cancer, equilibrium issues and more

I am asking again that you to take the time to conduct thorough research, not just on the projected economic benefits touted by some but also on the voices of residents who fear for their homes and health. We are in this together, and our community deserves a careful, thoughtful approach to growth.

Alternative Energy Solutions

While I acknowledge the potential benefits of advanced energy technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, we must weigh their pros against the significant regulatory hurdles and potential risks. The proposed microreactor at Fort Bragg, for example, while promising clean energy, operates under a different set of regulations, and its implications for our community remain to be seen!! Are pipelines pushed through Fayetteville!?? What happens in the city effects the county and vs versus!!

Your Leadership Matters

Mayor Mitch Colvin, your leadership has been a beacon for our community. We elected you multiple times!! To represent our interests, and now is the time to stand up for our shared values. The urgency of right darn NOW is upon us!

You and the council need to reconsider the path forward and prioritize a moratorium to ensure we do not jeopardize our health and environment for short-term gains!!

In closing, I ask you to reflect on the voices of your constituents and the future we wish to build together.

The people of Fayetteville are counting on you to take the necessary steps to protect our community.

I keep thinking about the voter who sees a long line at the polls.

The person who discovers too late that they needed to take an extra step to confirm their registration.

The parent who has to figure out how to vote around work and family responsibilities.

For some people, a new barrier is an inconvenience.

Across the country, the landscape is changing.

More than 1.2 million Texas voters are currently on the state’s suspense list. Tarrant County has eliminated 92 Election Day polling locations. And the Justice Department plans to deploy approximately 1,000 personnel to polling places during the midterms.

These developments are exactly why our work is so crucial. NAACP is building the infrastructure to reach voters where they are.

Our historic GOTV campaign is working to mobilize 6.5 million Black voters and recruit 20,000 volunteers across 14 states and 33 congressional districts.

We have fought too hard for the right to vote to take it for granted now.

City of Fayetteville law enforcement is seeing a significant decrease in violent crime. They recognize that strong partnerships with community organizations like Greater Life of Fayetteville are essential to reaching and supporting at-risk youth and their families.
The Suspension Restoration Program from GLOF provides mentorship, guidance, and practical prevention and intervention tools to help youth redirect negative thought patterns, make better choices, avoid suspension, and create more positive outcomes in school.
GLOF’s Crime Prevention Dining-IN Workshops give youth and families a safe space to discuss challenges such as gun violence and the incarceration of loved ones, share lived experiences, and connect with community resources and support systems. Upcoming dates will be announced soon.
