It is with profound sadness that the Ferguson Fire Department announces the passing of retired Captain Trudy Giancola. Captain Giancola began her career with the Ferguson Fire Department on January 19, 1982. In 1991, she was promoted to the rank of Captain, becoming one of the first female fire captains in the St. Louis County fire service. For more than 27 years, Captain Giancola faithfully served the citizens of Ferguson and the members of this department before retiring on November 19, 2009. Trudy was more than a firefighter and officer. She was a trailblazer, a mentor, a friend, and an important part of the history of the Ferguson Fire Department. Those fortunate enough to work alongside her will remember her quick wit, strong personality, and ability to keep everyone in line while still making the firehouse a better and more enjoyable place to come to work. Retirement never ended Trudy’s connection to the Ferguson Fire Department. She remained a familiar face at department events, stayed connected with our members, and remained immensely proud of the patch she wore and the department she served until the very end.
For more than four decades, Trudy has been part of the Ferguson Fire Department family. Today, that family is a little smaller. We are less than we were. She will be missed, but she will not be forgotten. Our thoughts are with Trudy’s family, friends, and the many firefighters whose lives she touched throughout her career. Rest easy, Captain.

The Ferguson Fire Department would like to congratulate Firefighters Denny Canoy and Ken Hoelscher on their well-earned retirements! Denny Canoy began his career with the Ferguson Fire Department on August 28, 1997, and retired on August 2, 2026, after nearly 29 years of dedicated service to the Ferguson community. Ken Hoelscher began his career with the City of Ferguson as a Public Safety Officer with the Ferguson Police Department on August 8, 1987. During the time when Ferguson operated under a dual-role public safety model, Ken transitioned to the Ferguson Fire Department on September 15, 2008, where he continued serving as a firefighter until his retirement. Ken retires after 39 years of dedicated service to the City of Ferguson. Together, Denny and Ken represent decades of service, dedication, and commitment to the City of Ferguson and its residents. Their experience, friendship, and presence around the firehouse will truly be missed. Please join us in congratulating Denny and Ken on their well-deserved retirements and wishing them all the best as they begin this next chapter. Congratulations, Denny and Ken, and thank you for your many years of service!

After more than 33 years of dedicated service, Captain James Ethier officially retired from the Ferguson Fire Department on July 28, 2026. Captain Ethier began his career as a firefighter on July 18, 1993, and worked his way through the ranks, serving as an engineer before being promoted to captain. Throughout his career, he helped mentor and shape a new generation of firefighters, leaving a lasting impact on our department.
Captain Ethier will truly be missed by everyone at the Ferguson Fire Department including Ember. Please join us in thanking him for his many years of service and wishing him a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement!

Today, crews from both firehouses responded to a commercial vehicle fire at the intersection of New Halls Ferry Road and Pershall Road. Upon arrival, firefighters found a commercial food truck fully involved. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and extinguished the blaze. We would like to thank our surrounding fire departments for their assistance and teamwork on this incident. Florissant Valley Fire Protection District, Black Jack Fire Protection District, Metro North Fire Protection District, Christian Hospital EMS, Central County Emergency 911, and Ferguson Police Department.
