β›ˆοΈ The National Weather Service is forecasting the potential for strong to severe storms this evening.

Now is a good time to make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, including emergency alerts on your phone, weather apps, and NOAA Weather Radio.

If a Tornado Warning is issued, take shelter immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest level of a sturdy building, away from windows.

Stay weather aware and be prepared to act if conditions change.

Update to timing and location of risks. Severe storms likely starting by early evening with all hazards possible, including damaging winds, large hail, and strong tornadoes. The corridor of greatest tornado threat includes much of the I-70 corridor including the Indianapolis Metro Area. The timing of greatest tornado threat is 8 PM to 12 AM. Have a safety plan in place and be ready to act when severe weather is imminent.

🌊 This week, Fishers Fire Department firefighters trained on parallel bank search techniques at a retention pond.

Retention ponds are artificial stormwater areas designed to collect runoff and help prevent flooding. While they may look inviting, they were not designed for recreational use and can present hidden hazards, including steep banks, sudden drop-offs, and poor visibility.

Our recommendation is to stay out of retention ponds and avoid playing near the water's edge. If you are spending time near a retention pond, remember:

βœ… Wear a properly fitted life jacket when around the water
βœ… Always have a buddy
βœ… In an emergency, Reach or Throw, Don't Go. Use a long object or flotation device to help from shore and call 911 immediately.

Training helps prepare our crews for water emergencies, but understanding the risks around retention ponds can help prevent emergencies.

Last week, firefighters in Driver/Operator class spent time sharpening their aerial skills with Ladder 93.

Not every firefighter is qualified to drive and operate a fire apparatus. Before earning Driver/Operator certification, firefighters complete extensive training on the specialized vehicles used to serve our community.

During this training, firefighters worked on a variety of aerial skills, from apparatus inspections and setup to ladder operations and precision maneuvering. These hands-on exercises help prepare firefighters to safely operate aerial apparatus in a wide range of emergency situations.

Driver/Operator training is one of the many ways we prepare our firefighters to serve the community safely and effectively.

Prevent. Prepare. Respond. πŸš’
