🗳️ Virginia Voting Rights Update
Beginning July 1, 2026, a new Virginia law changes how voting rights are addressed when a guardian is appointed.
Under the new law, individuals placed under guardianship will keep their voting rights unless a court specifically determines that those rights should be removed and provides an explanation for that decision.
This change shifts the process from automatic removal to preserving voting rights unless the court orders otherwise.
If voting rights were removed in the past, individuals may be able to petition the court to have those rights restored.
At Moms In Motion, we believe that access to information helps individuals and families make informed decisions about their rights and options. Review the resources in this graphic from The Arc of Northern Virginia to learn more about the law and available advocacy support from them and the disAbility Law Center of Virginia.
