Processing tomato harvest is underway across the District. California grows roughly 95% of the nation's processing tomatoes, and Westlands growers farmed nearly 39,500 acres of them in 2025. Every one of those acres depends on water delivered on schedule through the hottest weeks of the year. This is the payoff of the season growers have been building toward since spring.

Reliable water is also a case for environmental stewardship. Land that is actively and consistently farmed sees less subsidence, healthier soils, and more carbon stored below the surface than land left idle. In a groundwater basin working toward long-term sustainability, a well-managed working landscape is doing real environmental work, not just producing a crop.

July is Smart Irrigation Month. Many growers across Westlands now run drip and micro-irrigation systems that deliver water straight to the root zone instead of across the whole field, cutting the amount lost to evaporation and runoff. It is a small monthly observance with a real payoff: more crop per drop, and less pressure on a groundwater basin working toward long-term balance.
