Irrigation season is one of the busiest times of the year at FID.

As water deliveries continue, Water System Operators are hard at work managing the flow of surface water through canals and coordinating deliveries with growers throughout the District. 💧

Thank you to our WSOs for everything they do to help keep water moving this season. 🙌

FID through the years 💧

From early canal construction to today, FID’s canal system continues to play an important role in delivering surface water throughout the District. Since its establishment in 1920, FID has continued investing in and maintaining surface water infrastructure to support reliable water deliveries for years to come.

Did you know FID’s boundaries cover 250,000 acres, including 150,000 acres of productive farmland? 🌱

Growers within these boundaries help make Fresno County the nation’s top agricultural producer, and FID delivers the surface water their farms rely on to keep crops thriving. 💧

The Kings River plays an important role as the District’s primary source of surface water. 🌊

Water from the river travels through FID canals to deliver supplies to growers and nearby communities. When available, these supplies help reduce reliance on groundwater pumping and support long-term water conditions throughout the region.

Reliable surface water supplies continue to support agriculture, communities, and the local economy. Beyond supporting water supplies, the Kings River also continues to be a valued recreational resource enjoyed by many throughout the Central Valley.

What’s your favorite spot along the Kings River? Let us know below. ⬇️

Growers in FID produce a wide array of crops that help feed communities across the nation. 🌱

In 2025, almonds remained the top crop by acreage, continuing to make up the largest share across the District. Citrus and corn also saw notable increases compared to 2020.

Take a look at how cropping trends in FID have changed over the past five years. ⬇️

Are these trends reflected in your farming operations?

Since 2021, FID has secured more than $33 million in grant funding.

By combining grant funding with assessments, the District is able to stretch resources further and invest in projects that support landowners, including:
💧 Capturing more water during wet years
🌱 Expanding recharge capacity
💦 Improving water use efficiency

Water deliveries continue into May 🌊

With deliveries underway, growers are encouraged to take advantage of available surface water supplies. Using surface water helps reduce groundwater pumping, supports aquifer stability, and helps preserve groundwater for use during dry years.

What types of irrigation systems are you using to make the most of available water deliveries?
