After receiving a report from a concerned community organization about an illegal dumpsite near a public park in Southeast Gainesville, KACB stepped in to help restore the area.

In just a couple of hours we removed approximately 350 pounds of litter and illegally discarded debris including three tires, a boat engine, a toilet and two shopping carts helping make this community space cleaner and more welcoming for everyone!

To help prevent fires in natural areas and at waste facilities, where discarded v**es and other battery powered smoking devices are increasingly being found, KACB is now serving as a free drop off location for these items to be responsibly disposed of.

While conventional cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the world, electronic ci******es and va**ng devices are becoming more common in our environment. These items are not conventional trash, they are considered hazardous waste and require careful handling and proper disposal.

Many of these devices contain lithium-ion batteries that can start dangerous fires if damaged or improperly discarded. These fires are often difficult to extinguish and may release toxic gases, threatening sanitation workers, waste collection vehicles, facilities and the community.

Please do not place these items in your household trash or recycling for collection. Instead, residents may bring them to KACB during business hours for a free drop off or take them directly to Leveda Brown Environmental Park’s Hazardous Waste Department for proper disposal.

If you or someone you know has a v**e or battery operated smoking device that needs to be disposed of responsibly, we encourage you to take advantage of these safe disposal options.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please send us a message. Together, we can help protect our environment and our neighbors.

Earlier this morning, KACB proudly welcomed a new Adopt-A-Road sponsor in Gainesville with a celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony.

Please join us in welcoming the Lampp family! Following an overview and safety training with our Executive Director, they headed out for another cleanup and quickly got to work. In just under an hour the group collected more than 25 pounds of litter making a noticeable difference along their beautiful adopted stretch of roadway. Their efforts did not go unnoticed, as passing residents shared appreciative honks and waves of support along the way.

If your family is interested in becoming an Adopt-A-Road sponsor in Gainesville or anywhere across Alachua County we would love to connect with you.

A big thank you once again to the Lampp family for stepping up to help keep Alachua County beautiful!

Did you know? KACB supports community and school gardens throughout the county, especially those growing edible plants to benefit neighbors and provide hands on learning opportunities for students.

We’re able to assist in a variety of ways, including providing plants, materials, supplies, education and volunteer support to help gardens get established and become self sustaining over time.

It has been a pleasure supporting several gardens already this year and the photos provided highlight the McRorie Garden, which we were proud to assist with plant donations.

If you’re interested in learning more about this program or exploring how we may be able to support your garden project, please feel free to reach out to us.
