Four Calls. 37 Minutes. One Thinly Staffed System.
Busy afternoon and evening for the Glenwood Fire Department, leaving the bays empty as members of Glenwood Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 5557—the 3-person on-duty crew and off-duty members—along with Glenwood IA Fire Department volunteers answered call after call.
Crews were stretched thin while answering 4 calls in just 37 minutes.
🚑 16:46 — North Hazel Street | Medical
Answered by the 3-person on-duty crew with Medic 3 and Rescue 17. Patient transported to Council Bluffs.
🚑 17:09 — Timber Lane | Trauma
Answered by Medic 2 with 1 on-duty medic and 1 volunteer, along with Fire Car 1 with the Chief. No transport.
🔥 17:15 — Glenwood State Park | Outside Fire
Answered by Fire Car 1 with the Chief, Utility 11 with 1 off-duty paid staff member and 1 volunteer. Small fire extinguished.
🚑🚒 17:23 — South Sharp Street | 2-Car MVA
Answered by Fire Car 1 with the Chief, Medic 1 with 1 off-duty paramedic, Medic 2 with 1 on-duty medic and 1 volunteer, Utility 11 with 1 off-duty member and 1 volunteer, and Rescue 17 with 1 off-duty paramedic. Patient transported to Council Bluffs.
In total, these 4 calls were answered by:
• 3 on-duty crew members
• 3 off-duty paid crew members
• 2 volunteers
• 1 Chief
Every single EMS call had at least one paramedic on scene.
Multiple calls occurring within minutes of each other push our current staffing levels to critical conditions. Yet our on-duty members, off-duty members, and volunteers continue to answer the call—without hesitation.
IAFF Local 5557 will continue to advocate for additional full-time staffing from the City of Glenwood until we believe our community has been provided an adequate staffing level.
3/3/2 on duty staffing is not enough to safely and effectively cover our current call volume, especially with patient transports requiring crews to travel to Council Bluffs and Omaha.
Our members both on and off duty will continue to show up.
Our volunteers will continue to show up.
Our community deserves a staffing level that allows us to answer these calls safely and effectively.
Glenwood deserves better staffing.
