If you drive by the Glenwood Fire Station and notice something a little different, there’s a very special reason why.
For the remainder of September, Glenwood Fire will be changing our station lights to yellow and white in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. These lights are more than a change in color as they are a small but visible way for our department to stand with children and families who are facing battles no child should ever have to face.
Childhood cancer affects not only the children diagnosed, but their parents, siblings, extended families, friends, classmates, and entire communities. Behind every diagnosis is a child who deserves the opportunity to simply be a kid, and a family doing everything they can to remain strong through an incredibly difficult journey.
As firefighters, EMTs, and members of this community, we are accustomed to helping people on some of their most difficult days. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we want to recognize another group of fighters—the children who show incredible courage while battling cancer, along with the families, doctors, nurses, researchers, and countless others standing beside them.
💛 But we wanted to do more than light up the station.
At the next Glenwood home football game on September 25th, Glenwood Fire personnel will be joining the Glenwood and Lewis Central School Districts in wearing specialized Childhood Cancer Awareness T-shirts in place of our normal department shirts.
We know that changing lights and wearing a T-shirt cannot take away what these children and families are going through. But we believe that showing support matters. Raising awareness matters. Supporting research matters. And reminding families that their community stands beside them matters.
So when you see the yellow and white lights shining from the Glenwood Fire Station, we hope you'll take a moment to remember what they represent.
💛 They are for the children currently fighting.
🤍 They are for the families standing beside them every step of the way.
💛 They are for the survivors and their incredible stories of strength.
🤍 They are in memory of the children whose lives were taken far too soon.
And they are a reminder that no child or family should have to fight cancer alone. We encourage our community to join us in recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, learning more about childhood cancer, supporting pediatric cancer research, and showing these children and their families that Glenwood stands with them.
From all of us at Glenwood Fire:
To the kids fighting—we see you.
We support you.
And we're standing with you. 💛🤍
