Tonight, I attended the Homelessness Discussion in Green Bay. It was encouraging to see so many community members engaged and willing to voice their thoughts, concerns, and ideas about the challenges facing our city.

As I was leaving, I had a thoughtful conversation with two women who have worked hard to make Green Bay a better place. They shared their frustration with the current state of the city and their concerns about safety and quality of life.

These women live in one of the apartment buildings along the Fox River and told me they hear gunshots almost every night. Hearing firsthand from residents who are directly experiencing these challenges is a powerful reminder of why we must listen to our community and work together toward meaningful solutions.

Green Bay deserves to be a safe, welcoming, and thriving community for everyone who calls it home.

On Wednesday, September 30, State Representative Amaad Rivera-Wagner, Jon Shelton for City Council - District 4, Emily Jacobson - Brown County Supervisor, City of Green Bay Government, Green Bay Police Department, Union Congregational United Church of Christ, and Brown County Homeless & Housing Coalition are bringing community members together to talk about homelessness in Green Bay. It’s a chance to listen, ask questions, share experiences, and hear from others who are working to better understand and address homelessness in our community.

We’d love to see as many community members as possible in the room. Your voice, perspective, and presence matter.

When I meet with families at their doorsteps, I am often asked about my thoughts on our education system. I am deeply concerned not only about what our children are learning in school, but also about the critical skills they may not be receiving. Today, only three out of ten fourth-grade students are reading at grade level. That is a challenge we cannot afford to ignore.

This is why I believe parents should have the freedom to choose the educational path that best meets their children’s individual needs and helps them succeed.

Underly didn’t talk about reading, writing, math, graduation rates, or low test scores. Instead she talked about using schools to be welcoming places, and to empower children to participate in “democracy.”
