Friends of Libraries are one of many groups that work to help support libraries and library communities, including those in K-12! Featured in this post: Friends of the Livonia Public Library are hosting a Socktober Clothing Campaign, their third bi-annual clothing drive campaign, with the goal of donating all socks to the Livonia Central School District, and West Babylon Public Library, in collaboration with the Teens Department, hosted a New Logo Design contest for the Friends group, selecting a teen submission to represent their group for years to come!

Even as we approach the end of the week, Friends of Libraries continue to work all year to support their libraries! Thank you to our Friends here at NYLA and be sure to celebrate your Friends group today!

Another way that Friends of Libraries support their libraries is through fundraising events! The Friends of the William K Sanford Town Library hosted their annual book sale, to which library staff thanked them by saying, “Our Friends sort and alphabetize thousands of books for their annual sale. It takes a lot of time and dedication, and the results are evident. We are grateful!” Additionally, the Friends of Mendon Public Library are hosting a silent auction this week and encourage visitors to place a bid and celebrate this week!

One of the many things Friends of Libraries do is host fun and exciting programs for library communities! This post features Sally Stroh next to the Community Library’s Love Your Library "First Date with A Book" Display, and Friends of the Franklin Square Public Library’s 100th Anniversary of The Great Gatsby and Cabot Cove (Murder She Wrote) Tea Party events!

Though today is our last post, Banned Books Week will officially close out tomorrow with “Let Freedom Read Day.” So tomorrow, purchase a banned book, register to vote, call your local representative, educate yourself on book censorship cases in your area, and support your local library! Banned Books Week may be ending, but the fight to end censorship never ceases. Thank you to the staff of Sachem Public Library for reading!

10/09/2026

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak has had one documented censorship attempt according to the OIF, but oftentimes, most censorship at public, school and college/university libraries goes unreported. Databases such as the Censorship Search Portal, created by the OIF, are designed to track and document instances of book challenges. This database is also where the information for this week’s posts was pulled from. Thank you to Rosemary Kiladitis of the Queens Public Library at Corona and Giovanna Fiorino-Iannace of the Tuckahoe Public Library for reading!
