The thing I love about our country and our corner of Indiana is that we are a melting pot of the many different cultures that make up the United States. These cultures coexist well when we have mutual respect for one another. When this melting pot of working families is respectful of our diverse perspectives we are stronger.

Three of the religious traditions that dominate the world have much in common. All three trace the human origin to God’s creation of Adam. All three tell of the great flood. All three tell of delivering their people out of bo***ge in Egypt through the parting of the Red Sea.

When I hear about someone disparaging one of the great religious traditions of the world it saddens me. All three religious traditions worship the same God. All three command love of God and love of our neighbors. Someone who disrespects or harms their neighbor disrespects God. Hateful rhetoric is blasphemous. I don’t care if God is expressed through Jesus, Muhammad, or David. It is the same God commanding that we love one another.

Love and respect is the moral imperative that we must live by. No one is perfect but all should strive for the moral imperative of love and respect.

Earlier this week, along with hundreds of others, I attended the community meeting: "Our Mill, Our Future: A Community Town Hall on Clean Steel." We discussed the health impacts of steel production on workers and the community. We learned about modern steel making techniques that are being put into practice in other parts of the country. The Coal/coke production process is becoming obsolete.

The purchase of US Steel by Nippon Steel poses an opportunity to upgrade the Gary Works plant to align with the future of steel making techniques, and they've committed to investing billions in the Gary Works facility.

We must advocate for this modernization to Clean Steel production to protect jobs and the health of workers and the communities across Northwest Indiana.
