Hannibal Rural was called for an automatic crash notification to a location on US 61 highway at Stable Drive on April 14. Automatic crash notifications are transmitted to 9-1-1 when a cell phone experiences a sudden drop. Law enforcement, Fire department and EMS were dispatched to the scene. Law enforcement was first on scene and did not locate a vehicle and fire and EMS were cancelled. NECOMM gave us (Hannibal Rural) a what three words (more about that latter) location. One of our firefighters was able to locate the cell phone using this information on the side of the road on the highway rumble strip and retrieved it. Latter that afternoon NECOMM was able to give us the name and location of the cell phone owner and the phone was returned to his daughter at their home.
What-Three-Words is an App that is a location finder application that can be downloaded to your phone. NECOMM was able to ping this phone and give the fire department the location and using the APP the fire department was able to locate the phone. The APP is accurate to within just a few feet.
