TONIGHT AT 7:00 PM!! VIRTUAL: Celebrating 250 -- American Revolutionary Painter Charles Wilson Peale

Charles Willson Peale was an exemplary patriot and served under George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Many of his earliest portraits were miniatures painted on the battle fields. Peale then went on to paint hundreds of the Revolutionary patriot portraits, including at least 60 of George Washington. In 1784, Peale founded the Philadelphia Museum, one of the oldest museums in America and in 1805, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the first art academy in America. Explore Peale’s tremendous contribution in documenting the men of the American Revolutionary War. Led by art historian Martha Chiarchiaro, owner of Seeing History.

TONIGHT AT 7:00 PM!! VIRTUAL: Celebrating 250 -- Portraits Of A Revolution

Explore American portraits painted and sculpted during the years leading up to, and the decades after, the Revolution. The ideals, values and virtues expressly stated in our founding documents are easily identifiable in these portraits once we know how to “read” them. We will examine portraits of founding “fathers” and “mothers,” as well as of lesser-known individuals, as documents that can be read like texts. Examine the tradition of portraiture, and the influences of earlier art movements, artists, and artifacts, that inform these American portraits. Led by Inez McDermott, Professor Emerita of art history at New England College. She is a curator of art and history exhibitions at various museums and galleries throughout New England.

Local author Andrew Botieri will be discussing his novel, The Magical Espresso Machine. Andrew’s new novel “The Magical Espresso Machine” is a historical, fictional love story spans 7 decades from Italy during World War I to present day Plymouth, MA. This love story follows two teenagers, Generosa and Caesar, as they embrace their destiny to be together forever — until the tragedy of WWI tears them apart. Decades later, in Plymouth, a young Marie and her daughter, Jacelyn, encounter their own heartbreak and discover that their life is forever intertwined with a mysterious espresso machine whose magic transcends time from Italy to Plymouth. The connection to the dual-timeline story is where these characters lives magically intersect and are connected through the power of Jacelyn’s innocence.

Genderq***r inclusion consultant, Ali Kane (she/they) will share q***r stories from the 1600s to the 1960s. From these accounts, you will gain a glimpse into q***r lives throughout history, as well as explore how these truths were uncovered and strategies for preserving q***r history today. Through case studies, you will learn how historians continue to grapple with validating these experiences within 21st Century understanding of identity, gender, and family.

NEXT MONDAY NIGHT AT 7:00 PM!! VIRTUAL: Celebrating 250 -- New Hampshire & The American Revolution

New Hampshire often gets overlooked in the narrative of the American Revolution, overshadowed by its noisy neighbor to the south. Nowadays, few people know about Paul Revere’s first ride, which was to Portsmouth in December 1774 to warn the patriots that the British were coming to reinforce Fort William and Mary, five months before the Redcoats marched on Concord and Lexington. Nor do they know that two-thirds of the troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill were from New Hampshire. Most people are also unaware that New Hampshire’s Provincial Congress adopted the first state constitution in January 1776, making no mention of royal authority and essentially declaring independence from Great Britain six months before anyone else. And this is just the beginning of New Hampshire’s revolutionary story. Led by Sonia Booth, Visitor Services Coordinator for the New Hampshire Historical Society.
