Hello from Nemesis and Lily Crew! We are super excited about the Summer Library Program this year! The theme is "Plant A Seed, Read"!!!! Wednesday June 3rd is the Summer Kickoff Event at the North Park. "Duke Otherwise" will perform at 10am and the picnic starts at 11am. Please give a shout out to The HCL Library Foundation for sponsoring this day!!! We hope everyone wants to do fun Summer Library activities, so stop at the event to pick up folders for all ages... even the adults! Later all the information packets will be here... very close to us! Please say hello; we love our patrons! Plus everyone who visits will see how much progress has been completed with the . Both doors of the library are open now... if the librarians have not been informative on this new deal. Always, reporting good things happening at your local library.

The library was full of chickens and fans of all ages, who came for Owen Bruck's Young Author event! He read from his book “Chicken Chronicles,” introduced us to Tiny and his other chickens and his rooster Uno, and signed copies of his book. We look forward to seeing what book Owen decides to write next! Thanks to Owen and his family for a great program!

Mark your calendars! The Harlan Community Library is hosting several exciting programs during the last half of 2026. Author Darcy Dougherty Maulsby is our first Adult program for the Summer - "Farm-to-Fork Adventures in Iowa Agriculture".

It is I, Nemesis, and my Lily crew updates... Again... May 21st (last evening) was local gardener entrepreneur Mary Buchanan. Personally our favorite speaker for this year! Ahem... - Mary shared so many of her trial and errors of planting including all the bugs her garden encountered. Her dome greenhouse is astounding! She is growing lemons and has Koi fish in there! One can find Mary at Harlan's, Avoca's, and (new) Walnut's Farmer Markets June thru Sept. Ask her what to plant to keep pests away or plants to place in gardens for our great in Iowa. The Lily Crew only wishes their diet could include her Rhubarb jam. Sadly... only & allowed -- May 7 was a Mending Kit Class with the Change Makers. Most of the attendees brought jeans to try their sewing skills. Holes everywhere! Though the patrons who attended had loads of fun, us Lilies were not interested. We have no need to mend with a needle and thread. Librarians = water menders. The Change Makers gave the library a sewing kit for patrons to check out too. How kind of them to share! The Ladies were fun to chat with and so helpful!

It was a great morning learning about GROWING at Story Time! We had a special guest Farmer Jason, who came to visit and brought his tractor for us to see. We made watering cans and got seeds to take home too.
This was our last official Story Time until Fall. Next week, we will have a young guest author at 11am. Watch for details.
