Today we pause to honor and remember the brave people who gave their lives in service to our country. This Memorial Day, we reflect on their sacrifice, courage, and dedication, and extend our gratitude to all who have served.

This Memorial Day weekend we invite you explore the many monuments and memorials found throughout Haverhill.

Below, you will find a walking tour (2.1 miles start-to-finish, 2.8 miles roundtrip) that will both guide you to the locations of the monuments and provide you with additional information about what they represent and how they came to be. We’re so close — but we still need your help!

Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we’ve reached 72% of our fundraising goal for our upcoming summer exhibit and living history event, Stitching History Together. We now need to raise the remaining $3,660 to bring this exciting project to life.

This special program will reproduce an 18th-century gown owned by Abigail Adams while showcasing historic dressmaking techniques, exploring the connections between fashion and national identity, and recognizing the often-forgotten garment workers of the American Revolution.

The Buttonwoods Museum is dedicated to preserving history and educating the community about Greater Haverhill’s rich cultural past. Your support helps us continue that mission through exhibits, programs, and community events that bring people together.

Current exhibit:

Come experience the creativity and imagination of local young artists at the Greater Haverhill Arts Association Annual Student Art Exhibit at the Buttonwoods Museum!

This exciting exhibit features artwork created by area middle and high school students, showcasing everything from paintings and drawings to mixed media and more.

The exhibit runs May 10–17 and is open to the public during regular museum hours. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to support and celebrate the next generation of artists in our community!

Meet the historian bringing "Stitching History Together" to life, a major summer program for the Buttonwoods Museum that will combine history, fashion, and living demonstration to recreate a gown connected to Abigail Adams.

Sarah Walsh is an independent researcher, educator, and historical interpreter who has spent years studying the life of Abigail Adams.

Her journey began when she portrayed Abigail Adams in a staged production of 1776. That experience sparked a deep dive into Abigail’s life, letters, and world.

Now Sarah recreates garments from Abigail’s lifetime using authentic historic techniques.

She shares her work on Facebook and Instagram at Abigail Adams Historical Interpreter and has presented programs for organizations including the DAR Museum, Mount Harmon Plantation, City Tavern, and Historic Port Royal.

We are thrilled to welcome her to the Buttonwoods this summer!

As we reflect on Haverhill’s role in these historic events, we invite you to visit the Buttonwoods Museum and explore our special Bicentennial Memorabilia Exhibit, highlighting the people and stories that shaped our community during this pivotal time.
