Join us TOMORROW, Thursday, September 3rd, 2026 from 9-2pm at the Porter County Expo Center to properly discard your hazardous waste.

This can include old smoke detectors and batteries.

The Town of Hebron will be performing smoke testing on the sanitary sewers the first weeks of September. This involves blowing non-toxic smoke into the sewer system to determine the location of connections. You may see smoke coming from the vents on the roof of your home. This is normal. When smoke does enter your home, it often enters through fixtures that are not used routinely. Therefore, we request that you run cold water for a minute or 2 through all the fixtures and floor drains to ensure all traps are full of water. It has a slightly oily odor but is clean and harmless to people, pets, food and material goods. If the smoke does appear in your home, it will clear in a few minutes if you open the doors and windows.

COMPOST SITES TO REOPEN ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 28TH

The Portage, Valparaiso, and Boone Grove Compost Sites will REOPEN for Porter County residents ONLY at 8am on Friday, August 28th.

Starting Friday, August 28th, the compost site hours will resume Mon-Sat.

NEW INFORMATION !!

Going forward, we will be checking ID's and documenting the names + addresses from those who drop off materials at all of our compost sites.

Please be patient with us as this is a new system! Names and addresses MUST be legible.

We wanted to thank everyone for their patience this week while we sorted out the storm debris and made room to collect more! ✨️

COMPOST SITE UPDATES, PLEASE READ 💚

Our compost sites are NEAR CAPACITY and cannot accept additional storm debris at this moment. To relieve that pressure, the County will be announcing additional drop-off sites as soon as possible where residents can bring storm-related vegetation.

COMPOST SITE UPDATES:

✨️ The Portage Compost Site will be CLOSED Wednesday, August 26th and Thursday, August 27th.

✨️ The Valparaiso Compost Site will be open but will not be accepting any organic materials starting Wednesday, August 26th through Thursday, August 27th.
The site will NOT TAKE BRUSH, YARD WASTE, LOGS. ETC related to the storm.
The site WILL be open for drop-off recycling, electronic, light bulb, and battery recycling.
THERE IS ALSO NO LOADING FOR MULCH THIS WEEK.

✨️ Boone Grove Compost Site is business as usual for the moment .

CONTRACTORS OR RESIDENTS: can contact either Duneland Materials (219-364-0030) or Crisman Sand Company (219-462-3114) for material dumping for a cost.

Following today’s storm and severe weather, Indiana 211 is accepting damage reports for LaPorte, Newton and Porter counties.

To help establish a comprehensive assessment of damage, residents can call 866-211-9966 or visit the Indiana 211 website (on.in.gov/IN-211).

Collecting assessments via this process will help IDHS determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process.

Yesterday's storm caused the largest outage event in NIPSCO's history.

At this time, restoration estimates are not available. Once damage assessments are completed, we will begin sharing restoration timelines. We appreciate your patience as we respond to this historic storm event.

While crews restored power to thousands of customers overnight, many repairs currently underway involve transmission lines, substations, main distribution circuits and other infrastructure that must be repaired before neighborhoods can be energized.

Crews worked through the night responding to hazards, clearing debris, assessing damage and preparing repairs that will support larger restoration efforts today.

Due to the widespread and severe nature of the damage, restoration will remain a multi-day effort in some communities.

Safety Reminders:
🔺 Avoid unnecessary travel.
🔺 Stay away from downed power lines.
🔺 Give emergency responders and utility crews room to work.
🔺 We have received reports of natural gas leaks related to the storm. If you smell a rotten egg or sulfur-like odor, leave the area immediately and, from a safe location, call 911 and NIPSCO.
