Kouts Fire Department

Boone Grove Fire Department thank you once again for inviting us to train with you. Our members really enjoyed the opportunity to learn and practice these skills.
Kouts Fire Department members train regularly to learn and practice. Often times we train with mutual aid departments learning the location of their tools and proper use. Knowing this helps us and other departments respond more efficiently.

Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest

*** UPDATE - Due to utility relocation work, State Road 2 will remain closed at Horse Prairie Ave through Wednesday, November 25. ***

ROAD CLOSURE - State Road 2 south of Valpo (Porter County)

State Road 2 will be closed between C.R. 500 W and Southfield Ln beginning Thursday, October 22 to install a bridge approach concrete slab over a weak culvert, which will ultimately lift the current weight restriction on the roadway. The road will reopen on or after Sunday, October 25.

Drivers should seek an alternate route. The official detour will follow U.S. 30, State Road 49 and State Road 8.

State Road 2 is currently also closed to westbound traffic between Thornhill Dr and Thornapple Way. Traffic is unable to access State Road 2 from Hayes-Leonard Rd while this lane restriction is in place. This is an intersection improvement project to widen the road and resurface it. Phase one will be completed this fall, with the road reopening in mid-November. Phase two will occur in 2021.

Keep up the fight Vicki Kalmar! Your brothers and sisters at BGFD and surrounding FDs are always here for you!

Vicki Kalmar has been a member of South Haven Fire Department since August 2009. Vicki was raised in South Haven and went through Portage Township Schools. Since she was young, Vicki has always known she was meant to serve a greater purpose. Vicki’s EMS Career started nearly 20 years ago. Vicki started off as a Driver at a private ambulance company, Family Mobile Medical Services stationed out of Merrillville, IN. She obtained her Emergency Medical Technician License in 2002 and went through Superior Ambulance’s Accelerated EMT Program. Once she obtained her certification she continued to work at Family Mobile as an EMT on ALS/BLS ambulances. Vicki excelled through the ranks of Family Mobile extremely fast due to her hard work and determination. She started off as a shift supervisor and finished as Vice President of Operations. Vicki served as the VP of Operations for 7 years before she resigned to be a stay at home mother for her son Logan. Shortly after resigning from Family Mobile, Vicki started as a Volunteer FF/EMT at South Haven Fire Department. Vicki already had a good rapport with the members and they urged her to apply. Once she was on the department she immediately obtained her Mandatory and basic firefighter certifications. Vicki stated that during the training it makes you realize that this job isn’t just a job. Being a firefighter is a livelihood and a way of life because after all, your putting your life on the line for someone else. At the time, Vicki was 1 of 2 females in her academy class and the only female to finish the academy. During her first year she became Vice President of South Haven Fire Inc, and shortly after that President of SHFD inc. Vicki states “It brings me no greater joy then to serve and give back to the community that I grew up in.” Vicki says that she always knew that the fire service was her extended family but in 2017 she realized how much her fire department family meant to her and how much she meant to them. In 2017 Vicki was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cervical Cancer and went on Medical Leave. Vicki has gone through multiple operations, dozens of chemotherapy treatments, and dozens of radiation treatments. Vicki exclaimed “A lot of people were quiet, they didn’t know how to respond to me at first, but I dealt with it with humor. I named by Tumor George.” Her family at the fire department, since the beginning, have come together to give her rides to appointment, set up fundraisers, and overall give her the most support they can offer. Since her battle started Vicki has remained as active as she could on the department. Vicki’s cancer is described as rare and has metastasized multiple times. Vicki stated, “This is my family. The Chiefs and members won’t let me quit. I know no matter what there is over 40 people on a list that I can call on anytime.” During the Monthly Business Meeting in August, Vicki Stepped down as President of SHFD inc due to her cancer worsening. During that same business meeting through a unanimous vote, Vicki Kalmar was nominated and made a Life Time Member of South Haven Fire Department. All of us at South Haven Fire, Past and present, want to congratulate Vicki and wish her the absolute best during her battle of Cancer. Haven Hitmen forever Vicki! ⚫️🔴⚫️ #2793 #cervicalcancerawareness #VickiStrong
