Hawaii Island Adult Care, Inc. Since 1976 we have provided Hawai’i Island ‘ohana with high-quality adult day care and caregiver services to support aging in place.

Hawaii Island Adult Care, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit health and human services agency celebrating over forty years of service to kupuna and their families in East Hawaii. This agency operates two adult day care facilities for elders and challenged adults so they can continue living at home as long as possible.

🌺 Community to Campus Resource Fair at UH Hilo 🌺

Today, our Outreach Coordinator, Abby Barhite, joined the Community to Campus Resource Fair at UH Hilo to share the many ways our community can get involved with Hawaiʻi Island Adult Care. 💛

From spending time with our kūpuna, sharing a special talent or hobby, assisting with administrative projects, supporting caregiver respite activities, or contributing a specialized skill — there are so many meaningful ways to give back.

We were also grateful to connect with the UH Hilo Bonner Leaders Center for Community Engagement Luz Vargas Kaylee Brower SARAH HUEGLER, who continue to support HIAC through volunteer service and by helping with our major fundraising events. Their efforts directly help us raise funds for our Kūpuna in Need Tuition Assistance Program, helping make adult day care services more accessible to families in our community.

Partnerships like these remind us that we are better together. 🤝🌺

Art has the power to help us process, remember, connect, and heal. 🎨✍️💛

Our Outreach Coordinator, Abigail, had the opportunity to attend Poetry Fest at Basically Books in Hilo. While our guests were here in Hilo, Executive Director Andrea Wernli and Development Manager Samantha Bechert were also able to welcome them to Hawaiʻi Island Adult Care and provide a tour of our center.

We were grateful to connect with Hawaiʻi Poet Laureate Lee Tonouchi (2026–2029), Michelle Mitsumori, Director of Community Partnerships for the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, Aiko Yamashiro, Executive Director of the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, and Suzanne Wang, HIAC Ceramic Instructor and Caregiver.

Following the tour, we shared ideas about future collaborative workshops for caregivers that could create meaningful spaces for storytelling through poetry, ceramics, and creative expression.

We are excited about the possibilities of bringing these art forms together to support caregivers while honoring the importance of storytelling, cultural connection, creativity, reflection, and art as part of the healing process.

Mahalo nui to the Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities for creating opportunities for connection, creativity, and meaningful conversation. We look forward to continuing this collaborative work. 🌺

In memory of Dolly Parton, who dedicated her final years to caring for her beloved husband, Carl Dean. Her journey reminds us of the profound challenges caregivers face—often at the expense of their own health. As we honor her legacy, let’s not forget the crucial lesson she taught us: self-care is essential. If you’re caring for a loved one, remember to prioritize your own well-being. It’s not selfish; it’s necessary. 💖

After Hurricane Lala, there’s something especially comforting about coming back together around a warm, home-cooked meal. 💛

We are so grateful to our amazing Kitchen Manager, Nicole, for preparing today’s delicious hot meal for our HIAC participants—and even more grateful to see so many of their lovely faces back with us, safe and smiling.

Moments like these remind us that HIAC is more than a place to gather. It is a community that cares for one another through every season. 🌺

🌺 Aloha HIAC Participants, Families & ʻOhana!

We are happy to share that Hawaiʻi Island Adult Care will reopen tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 7:00 AM.

We extend our sincere mahalo to our participants, families, caregivers, staff, and community for your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we took necessary safety precautions during Hurricane Lala. The health and safety of our staff and the kūpuna we are honored to serve remain our highest priority.

Our thoughts are also with everyone in our community who was affected by Hurricane Lala. We are grateful for the resilience, care, and aloha shown throughout Hawaiʻi Island during this time.

💗 Mahalo for your understanding and kōkua. We look forward to welcoming everyone back to the center tomorrow 🙏🏻
