Friends of the Panaewa Zoo On the "Big Island" of Hawai’i, this 12-acre zoo is the only tropical rainforest zoo in the U.S.

Located on the "Big Island" of Hawaii, this 12 acre zoo is the only tropical rainforest zoo in the United States. It is home to more than 80 animal species including the endangered Nene (Hawaii State Bird) and two Bengal Tiger, Tzatziki and Sriracha. The links on the left will take you to interesting information on many of the Zoo's animal exhibits.

This day gives us a chance to make repairs, finish ongoing projects, and start new ones safely—without putting our guests at risk. Sometimes, we need to bring in heavy equipment to get the job done. We also use this time to keep our walkways in good condition so everyone can enjoy a safe, pleasant visit.

A new kiddo is on the block at Parrot Row 🌱
Meet Kūkui, our resident Laughing Kookaburra!!

Native to Australia, these birds are the largest of the kingfisher family, but these terrestrial hunters prefer prey such as insects, lizards, mice, small birds, and even snakes!! 🐍

Known for their iconic vocalizations, Laughing Kookaburras use their calls to communicate for territory, mates, and social hierarchy. 🎶

While Kūkui adjusts to his new home on Parrot Row, the Panaewa Zoo would like to remind the public to respect and observe all barriers to help keep our resident animals safe and healthy. 🦜
