Recently, we gathered at KEY Project in Heʻeia, Oʻahu and at the Papakōlea Community Center in Honolulu, for Project Makaʻala, a culturally grounded initiative dedicated to helping kūpuna recognize, avoid, and respond to financial scams and fraud.

Makaʻala means to be alert, vigilant, and aware a value that guides this program and the communities it serves. At its core is a simple, powerful practice: Pause. Kāhea. Then decide.

For many Hawaiʻi families, the barriers to owning a home aren’t just financial. They’re historical. And for us, home isn’t just a hale. It’s our kahua. It’s where we raise our keiki and build something that lasts.

For 25 years, HCA has helped ʻohana in Hawaiʻi find their way home. This June, we’re going deeper.

Follow along this month as we unpack what homeownership really means for our community and what it takes to make it possible.

Our newest HCA Board Member, former Kauaʻi County Council Member, Mason Chock, pictured here with Kauaʻi-based HCA Director of Advancement and Communications Makana Reilly. As President of Kupu Aʻe Leadership Development, he reflects on how his time serving on the Kauaʻi County Council deepened his understanding of the complexity of Hawaiʻi’s housing crisis and how our kūpuna once viewed housing as a source of refuge, shelter, health, and community. Our community has always taken care of our own. But what the data shows is that we're not just showing up for our families out of love. We're absorbing a housing crisis that government policy helped create.

Nearly 4 in 10 Native Hawaiian households informally shelter someone with nowhere else to go. The government calls them "hidden homeless." We call them 'ohana. And when we're priced out and forced to leave Hawai'i? We take that shelter with us.

Community organizations were never meant to replace government infrastructure. We're here because the gap is real, and our lāhui deserves to stay in Hawaiʻi.

On April 11, 1968, the Fair Housing Act was signed into law—making it illegal to discriminate in housing.

This landmark legislation was passed during the Civil Rights Movement to address widespread discrimination and ensure equal access to housing opportunities.

The Fair Housing Act protects individuals and families from discrimination based on:
• Race
• Religion
• National origin
• S*x
• Disability
• Family status

Housing discrimination can take many forms, including:
• Being told a unit is unavailable when it is
• Being given different rules or requirements
• Being denied the opportunity to rent or buy

Even today, these protections remain critical—especially here in Hawaiʻi, where access to safe and stable housing is deeply connected to community and wellbeing.

At Hawaiian Community Assets, we’re committed to helping our community understand their rights and navigate housing with confidence.
