His resignation letter merely hints at the dysfunction and turf wars which have raged since Hannemann’s “unity ticket” took over the Hawaii GOP in late May 2025: “I want to ask that we stop wasting energy on minor party differences . . . This is not the time for division or distraction. Every moment spent on internal disputes only helps the Democrats.” Reportedly driven out by his vice chair (and failed former past chair) “Big Shirl” Ostrov, the question now is WHO will the party pick to replace Hannemann (and will it even matter)?
