The Houlton Police Department in partnership with RSU 29 Shelly DeLuca, Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness Manager April Lola, hosted an impairment awareness activity with students.

Students had discussions with HPD about the dangers of drug usage, alcohol, impairment and texting while operating vehicles.

To illustrate the dangers, a cone course was set up and using golf carts, students maneuvered through the course using a variety of “fatal vision goggles” and attempted to text while operating the carts.

Students had a clear understanding of how impairment can effect safe operation! There were lots of laughs from great teens!

Students were also provided with information packets!

Well done!

The Aroostook Riders ATV club announced their trails are opening this Friday, May 22. Remember, trails are open only when approved by a local ATV club, so if riding outside the Aroostook Riders area, check with the specific club.

Most all of our trail systems throughout the state depend upon land owners sharing their land with enthusiasts. Follow the rules and stay on marked trails. Damage or disregard of the rules discourages landowners and impacts the pristine trail system here in the county. Let’s not jeopardize this gift. If you see a violation, contact authorities immediately.

Open trails mean all Houlton access roads are open for use with regulations. You can travel trail head to trail head, to the far right of the road and not to exceed 10 mph. In addition, ATV access roads only allow access during day time hours. Having access roads does not allow for general transportation throughout town on an ATV.

HPD will be patrolling our trails and access roads in partnership with the Maine Wardens Service thanks to grant funds. Be aware that enforcement action will be taken if required!

Please practice safe riding skills, look twice and save a life! The motorsports are an outstanding out door activity so please operate responsibly.

National Police Week, May 10 to May 16, 2026.

In recognition of National Police Week, I would like to honor those men and women who are actively serving, those who have served and those who have lost their lives in service, nation wide!

I thank, honor and appreciate each member of the Houlton Police Department for their unwavering dedication to the Town of Houlton. Law Enforcement is extremely demanding yet rewarding, it takes personal sacrifices to accomplish the mission.

Our responsibilities often place us with individuals at the most challenging points in their lives. The goal is to assist those in need by providing guidance in hopes to find a resolution.

We come to work each day to serve our community with integrity while providing a safe environment for all to live. This at times can be challenging.

We must never forget those who have the intent to do us harm.

Thank you for your service and may safety always be with you!

Chief DeLuca
