🚌 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER 🚌

As students return to school, the Houma Police Department and the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission reminds all motorists to use extra caution around school buses. Every stop a school bus makes is a chance to protect a child’s life.

School Bus Safety Tips:
🛑 STOP when a school bus has its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended. It is illegal—and extremely dangerous—to pass a stopped school bus. The fine for passing a school bus that has its stop arm and lights activated is up to $500.00

🚸 Watch for Children. Students may cross the street unexpectedly or step into traffic from in front of or behind the bus.

📵 Put the Phone Down. Distracted driving puts children at risk. Louisiana is a hands-free state, and traffic laws will be enforced. Fines for cell phone usage in a school zone is $250.00.

🚦 Slow Down. Obey posted school zone speed limits and be prepared for increased traffic during morning and afternoon school hours. School zones are active typically one hour before and after the school day begins and ends.

👀 Stay Alert. Always scan for students walking, biking, or crossing near bus stops and schools.

Let’s all do our part to ensure every student arrives at school safely and returns home safely each day.

📚🚔 BACK TO SCHOOL REMINDER 🚔📚

August 1, 2026

As students and educators prepare to head back to the classroom, the Houma Police Department would like to remind everyone that our roadways will become much busier beginning next week. Teachers return on Monday, and many students begin classes on Wednesday.

Please help us keep everyone safe by remembering:

🛑 Slow Down – Obey all posted school zone speed limits.

📱 Put the Phone Down – Louisiana is a hands-free state. Distracted driving laws will be actively enforced.

🚸 Watch for Pedestrians – Be alert for students, bicyclists, crossing guards, and pedestrians, especially near schools and crosswalks.

🚌 Stop for School Buses – It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus when its red lights are flashing and its stop arm is extended.

🚔 Expect Increased Enforcement – Houma Police Department Officers will conduct additional patrols and traffic enforcement in and around school zones throughout the start of the school year.

Let’s all do our part to ensure every student, teacher, and school employee arrives safely and returns home safely each day.

Slow down. Stay alert. Put the phone away. Every child deserves a safe trip to and from school.

Juvenile Arrested Following Shooting at Downtown Houma Festival

On July 19, 2026, at approximately 7:00 p.m., Officers with the Houma Police Department responded to a shooting near the intersection of Main and Church streets in downtown Houma, where the 2026 Juice Fest was taking place.

Three individuals sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Through their investigation, Houma Police Detectives determined that the shooting stemmed from an argument involving two teenagers attending the festival. Shortly after the verbal altercation, a 14-year-old male from Thibodaux produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds toward the festival crowd.

Houma Police Officers assigned to the festival, with assistance from Deputies from the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office, immediately responded and located the suspect approximately two blocks from the scene after he fled on foot. He was taken into custody without further incident. Officers also recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

Officers rendered assistance to three female gunshot victims, ages 12, 18, and 68. Investigators determined that none of the victims were involved in the initial disturbance. All three were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment.

The 14-year-old suspect was arrested and transported to the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center. He was charged with four counts of attempted murder, one count of terrorizing, one count of possession of a handgun by a juvenile, one count of obstruction of justice, and one count of illegal discharge of a weapon.

The Houma Police Department remains committed to protecting the community and maintaining a safe environment at public events and festivals. Acts of violence that endanger innocent residents and visitors will be thoroughly investigated, and those responsible will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
