Sound on! 🔊 We recently returned 30 Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks to the wild. Their name is no coincidence. Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks are known for their distinctive, high-pitched whistles, which they use while flying, swimming, and standing. Their calls are part of the natural soundtrack of wetlands, ponds, and fields across Texas. After receiving the care they needed, these 30 ducks were ready to return to the places where they belong. Watching them take flight is beautiful, but hearing their whistles fill the air again is a reminder of what wildlife rehabilitation is all about: returning healthy wild animals to the communities and habitats where they play their part. 🦆 💙

🐍 This hognose snake came to us after becoming trapped in a glue trap. He lost some scales and sustained a wound during the incident, but with veterinary care and time to heal, he is recovering well and will soon be ready to return to the wild. 🌿💚

⚠️ Glue traps can pose a life-threatening danger to wildlife. Birds, snakes, and other animals can become stuck while passing through an area where a trap has been placed, often suffering serious injuries in the process. Hognose snakes are also valuable members of their ecosystems. Both species found in Texas feed heavily on amphibians, particularly toads, and hognose snakes have specialized adaptations that allow them to prey on toads despite their defensive toxins. By helping regulate prey populations, they play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. 🌎

🐢✨ Say Hello to This Unique Turtle!

Most Red-Eared Sliders have dark green shells, yellow markings, and the distinctive red markings near their ears. Albino Red-Eared Sliders, however, lack the pigment melanin, giving them their unique pale yellow and pink coloring.

While their appearance is striking, albinism can also make these turtles more sensitive to sunlight and more vulnerable to predators in the wild.

One very special Albino Red-Eared Slider is currently receiving care from our veterinary and animal care teams after arriving at the Houston SPCA with shell abrasions. He is being treated and monitored as he continues to heal. 💚

🚨 Wildlife Rescue: TS Eduardo🚨
In just two days, 49 squirrels have been rescued or brought into our care from the Beaumont area in the wake of Tropical Storm Eduardo.
Severe weather can quickly increase the number of animals needing help, with flooding and high winds displacing young wildlife, damaging nests, and leaving animals injured or orphaned.
Our wildlife team is working around the clock to care for these new arrivals, and we need volunteers to help keep up with the increased demand.
🐿️ Wildlife volunteers play an important role in providing the frequent feedings these young animals need while they recover and grow strong enough for release.
If you have the time and are ready to get hands-on, consider becoming a wildlife volunteer. Your help could provide a much-needed extra set of hands during one of the busiest times of year.

🌺Happy National Hummingbird Day!🌺
These tiny birds may be small, but they are incredible athletes! Hummingbirds can hover in place, fly backward and forward, and beat their wings dozens of times per second.
A few more fascinating hummingbird facts:
• Their hearts can beat over a thousand times per minute during flight.
• They rely on nectar from flowers for energy, while also eating tiny insects for protein.
• Their feathers can shimmer and appear to change color depending on the light.
• Hummingbirds are important pollinators, helping move pollen from flower to flower as they feed.
If you spot a hummingbird in your yard, planting native, nectar-producing flowers and providing a safe habitat can help support these remarkable visitors. 💚

🐿️ Squirrel season has arrived! As baby squirrels begin making their appearance, our Wildlife Center is preparing to care for young, orphaned, and injured squirrels in need. If you find a baby squirrel, please resist the urge to feed them. Although they may look hungry or helpless, providing the wrong food or attempting to care for them at home can cause serious health complications. Instead, keep the squirrel warm and safe, and bring them directly to our Wildlife Center. Our trained wildlife team can provide the specialized nutrition, medical treatment, and care they need to grow strong and, when ready, return to the wild.
If you find a baby squirrel in need, the best thing you can do is get them into professional care as soon as possible. 💚🐿️

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight: Stan 🌟

For the past eight years, Stan has brought his love for animals 🐾, his sense of humor 😄, and his welcoming personality to the Houston SPCA. Wildlife staff describe him as always positive and encouraging, quick with a joke, and ready to welcome new volunteers to the team. 🤝

Stan’s passion for animals and veterinary work began long before he started volunteering. Although he initially loved working with small dogs 🐶, his interest soon expanded to wildlife. 🐿️🦉 A few months after he began volunteering, Stan started helping feed squirrels and discovered just how much he enjoyed caring for the wide variety of animals and birds that come through the Wildlife Center.

Stan remained a dedicated volunteer even throughout the challenges of COVID, continuing to give his time to animals in need. ❤️ When asked about his favorite part of volunteering, Stan says it is the people he works alongside, the animals he gets to help 🐾, and seeing how beautifully the program is managed.

Thank you, Stan, for eight years of dedication, laughter, encouragement, and compassion for the animals in our care! 💙👏

A flash of blue across a field or backyard may be an Eastern bluebird! 💙

These beautiful songbirds are common throughout Texas and can often be found in open woodlands, fields, and gardens. Their brilliant blue coloring doesn’t actually come from blue pigment; it comes from the way light interacts with the structure of their feathers! ✨

Bluebirds primarily eat insects, berries, and small fruits, and they often nest in tree cavities or nest boxes. Fun fact: They’re skilled hunters that will perch low to the ground before swooping down to catch insects! 🐛
