🏛️ Preserving Our Past, Securing Our Future!

Did you know that the story of the Houston Heights Woman's Club dates back to 1900, when the Heights was considered a brand-new suburb outside of Houston? What started as a dedicated literary circle grew into a larger community for civic leadership and women’s history—shaped by early visionaries like Anna Limbocker, co-editor of The Suburbanite newspaper, and an avid suffragist.

In 1911, as the club expanded, Helen Winfield Cooley generously donated the land at 1846 Harvard. Our historic clubhouse has stood at the heart of our community ever since, supported over the years by remarkable figures like valued club supporter Hortense Sparks Ward, Texas’s first female attorney and Supreme Court chief justice.

Now, this treasured landmark needs our help to preserve its foundation for generations to come.

Even with our clubhouse sinking 5 inches, nothing could stop a full house of members from "traveling to Paris" for our annual Weekday Kickoff! 🥖✨

We brought a little bit of Texas flair to a "Journée à Paris," complete with the eye- catching, visually stunning themed decor and a menu featuring delectable Quiche Lorraine from Angela's Oven and of course, macarons as the finishing touch!

Un immense merci du fond du cœur et félicitations au Kickoff Committee pour ce nouveau succès ! 🥐🥂🇫🇷

Every homeowner knows the never-ending "joys" of maintenance, but the women of the Houston Heights Woman’s Club recently learned a hard historic truth: legendary cypress wood beams don't necessarily last forever—especially when you realize the clubhouse has sunk 5 inches on one side!

Turns out, contrary to popular opinion, pier and beam repairs aren't always easy or cheaper than slab work—particularly when you factor in Houston’s water-retaining gumbo soil, which is notoriously about as forgiving as concrete. Speaking of concrete—we’re talking about adding a stem wall plus more concrete masonry support units and replacing several undersized sill beams. Sounds complicated? Well, it is involved—definitely not a do-it-yourself job! And of course, drainage remediation under and around the house remains a continual, significant undertaking that we're all too familiar with.

Preserving a unique landmark of Houston history, circa 1912, is no small feat. If you love the historic charm that makes our neighborhoods special, please consider chipping in to help protect and restore the clubhouse foundation—and please share this post to help spread the word!

A morning well spent for deserving students! We are grateful for the fabulous teamwork at Sherman Elementary. Our HHWC members and Hope Stone, Inc. volunteers have been hard at work converting the old storage room back into a vibrant library for the kids—one book at a time.

Thank you to everyone who showed up and made this restoration possible. 📚✨
