Somber duty today. Village fire units honored the memory of ESD 48 Paramedic Gordon Baker. Mr Baker was transported from the Medical Center to a funeral home in Katy and passed the Villages on I-10.

Village Fire Fighters responded to a minor house fire this afternoon in Spring Valley. The house sustained minimal damage & there were no injuries. Village Fire Fighters were assisted by Houston District Chief 5, Engine 5, Engine 38 & the Spring Valley Police Dept.

This afternoon Village Firefighters responded to a motor vehicle accident on Memorial Drive @ Kensington Ct. in Piney Point. Firefighters arrived to find a pickup truck had impacted a brick wall & was resting on its side. The occupant was still trapped inside. Firefighters used stabilization struts to stabilize the truck & hydraulic cutters to remove the roof. The driver was removed & transported downtown to a trauma center with non life threatening injuries. Firefighters were assisted by the Memorial Village Police Dept. a good job by all involved.

Today Village Fire Fighters participated in a rescue training class with the Houston Fire Dept on Westview in Spring Valley. Houston Rescue 10, 11 & 42 participated in low angle (below grade) rescue training. Thank you Houston Rescue & the firm of Krueger & Catalano for the use of their parking lot.

Last week Village Firefighters practiced their saw skills on a simulated roof. Cutting a hole in a roof allows heat & smoke to escape making conditions inside the fire more bearable. A ventilation hole also will slow the spread of the fire.

Village Fire Fighters responded to a motor vehicle accident on the Katy Freeway near Bingle Rd today. One person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The Spring Valley Police Dept & Precinct 5 Constables Office were also on the scene.

Today Village Firefighters practiced removing a victim from an upper story with a stokes basket. A stokes basket is a stretcher designed for rescue & is built to allow ropes to be attached for lowering & hoisting. This skill is routinely practiced for speed and efficiency.

Village Fire Fighters on the "B" shift recently trained with air bags. Air bags are devices that are capable of lifting heavy objects to free trapped individuals. They are very useful and effective rescue tools. However, great care must be given to not shift an unstable load during the lift. Blocks of wood are used to shore up the load during the lift, to ensure the load doesn't fall down on the trapped person or rescuer.

Today Village Fire Fighters on the “C” Shift participated in live fire training at the Harris County Fire Field in Humble. Fire fighters trained under real conditions in searching for victims, advancing hose lines, rooftop ventilation & pumping operations.

Today Village Fire Fighters participated in a training evolution involving the advancement of hoselines supplied by the aerial ladder. This technique could be used in a parking garage, a large building or on a rooftop of a large commercial building. Thanks to the Kincaid school for allowing us to do this.

On Sunday June 7th Village Fire Fighters on the “A” shift responded to an apartment fire in Hedwig Village. The fire was contained to 1 unit and there were no injuries. Unfortunately two pets passed away from the fire.
