From Texas PTA...

Dear PTA Supporters,

We appreciate your ongoing support of the important legislative priorities that Texas PTA has set out to improve the health, welfare, and safety of students throughout Texas. Each legislative session, a new issue always seems to emerge that wasn’t on the policy horizon when the session began in January. HB 281 is this session’s surprise for PTA and I’m personally asking for your help to stop this bill.

HB 281 strikes down the core of our PTAs’ collaborative relationships with the school communities they serve and strips away the ability for our PTA Leaders and Members to effectively support the education of all children. While most policymakers indicate that the impact on PTA is an unintended consequence in their efforts to curb publicly-funded lobbying, there is still an unwillingness to change the language in the bill to protect the good work of PTA and the genuine efforts of families and educators around the state.

PTAs provide tens of millions of dollars each year in supplemental funding to our schools, not to mention the additional millions of dollars in volunteer hours. In return, schools typically allow PTAs the use of meeting space, electricity, water, and other basic needs to fulfill our mission of making every child’s potential a reality.

If passed in its current form, HB 281 will end this in-kind support for our nearly 2700 Local and Council PTAs. The fall festivals and carnivals that have been part of our communities for so long would likely become financially impossible for PTAs in Texas. Health fairs, parent education programs, field day, Reflections ceremonies, and teacher recognition – all are at risk because of HB 281.

Unfortunately, one version of this bill has already passed through the Senate and HB 281 is awaiting a date for a floor vote in the House. I need our hundreds of thousands of supporters to step forward and help us defeat HB 281 before it reaches the House floor!

Call or email your Representative today and tell them that HB 281 should NOT be set for a floor vote by the House Calendars Committee.

Thornwood Field Day

Sister School Solutions

As the school year is winding down there are several ways to help out our schools who either do not have a Sister School or schools with a Sister School that could use some additional community support. Please read below two opportunities and share them with your PTA and school:

Treasure Forest Elementary: Treasure Forest is one of our schools in the district without a Sister School. Next year they will be changing their dress code and are welcoming donations of school uniforms. The new dress code will consist of khaki bottoms (shorts, pants, skirts, and skorts (NO CARGO PANTS, CARGO SHORTS, DRESSES OR ROMPERS) in sizes 6X-12/14. The students will wear short sleeve or long sleeve polos in forest green in sizes XS-L with just a few XL. Any sweaters or jackets, but they must either zip or button all the way from top to bottom and can only be worn in black, gray, forest green or white. These items can be found at Walmart, Target or The Children’s Place either in store or online. Starting this Monday, you may drop off any donations to Treasure Forest Elementary (7635 Amelia Road, Houston, TX 77055 Attn: CIS), Rummel Creek Elementary (625 Brittmoore Road, Houston, TX 77079) or Sherwood Elementary (1700 Sherwood Forest St., Houston, TX 77043). If you prefer to donate a gift card from Walmart or Target, you may do so, but these cards need to be hand delivered directly to Treasure Forest Elementary (they will not be accepted at Rummel Creek or Sherwood Elementary) and you will want to make sure that they are designated only for school uniform purchases.

Thornwood Elementary: Thornwood Elementary is one of our schools without a PTA but they do have a very active Sister School. However, at this time their Sister School is focusing a lot of their efforts on several projects for Thornwood and are concerned they may not be able to offer as much help as they would like to give for Thornwood’s upcoming Field Day scheduled on May 25. The CIS Project Manager at Thornwood has put together a Signup Genius and is asking for community support to help make Field Day a success for the students at Thornwood. The link for the Signup Genius is below and I ask that you share it with your school. As a reminder, anyone who volunteers at any of our schools must be a registered volunteer with SBISD.

Legislative Honor Roll - Texas PTA - every child. one voice.

The SBISD 2017 Bond has passed! Please thank all of your parents who voted and thank YOU for all the great work you did reminding them to vote.

Texas PTA named Representative Dan Huberty as legislative advocate of the year. Texas PTA also named 11 lawmakers to the Legislative Honor Roll for their work during the 85th Legislative Session. A complete list of recipients can be found on the Texas PTA website (https://www.txpta.org/legislative-honor-roll-85). You may notice that the list does NOT include any of our local legislators. We have much work to do with our local legislators to make them better able to support public education! We will have an opportunity to vote on many during the upcoming March primaries and/or next November when they are up for reelection.

We also have work to do with the Texas Education Agency and State Board of Education. Both want to hold SBISD schools accountable for STAAR test results this year -- despite the displacement of many in our neighborhoods and the loss of two weeks of instruction due to Harvey. It is unfair to compare our kids with those who did not deal with a natural disaster this year, but that is what the state will do unless they hear from us. Next week's newsletter will include information you can forward to your parents on what they can do to help!

Individuals recognized for the Texas PTA Honor Roll should demonstrate initiative to enhance the quality of life for children and youth, improve the quality of education for all children and youth, strengthen families, improve child safety standards, show support for children, youth, families and PT...
