National Reconciliation Week starts this week. It occurs annually from 27 May to 3 June, celebrating Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and promoting reconciliation.
These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the Australian reconciliation journey—starting with the successful 1967 referendum, when more than 90 per cent of Australian voters chose ‘Yes’ to count Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the census. The week ends on the anniversary of Australia’s High Court Mabo decision.
2021 marks almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process and incorporates the theme ‘More than a Word, Reconciliation Takes Action’ urges those that are involved in the reconciliation movement to be braver and engage in more impactful action.

National Reconciliation Week: Ngu'ngini - Harvesting Traditional Knowledge

'Ngu'ngini - Harvesting Traditional Knowledge', a new film proudly supported by Australia in the United States, tells the story of how the Peppimenarti community in the Northern Territory prepare bark for their paintings by blending traditional and modern methods.
After this practice was almost lost forever, the cultural custodians of Peppimenarti worked together to re-instate traditional harvesting practices and foster an intergenerational transfer of knowledge and culture tens of thousands of years old.
You can watch this film 👇to learn how traditional harvesting knowledge and practices help protect libraries of knowledge, culture and art, and build strength and resilience in communities.

In recognition of their ultimate sacrifice during the 2019-20 bushfires, US firefighters the late Captain Ian McBeth, the late First Officer Paul Hudson and the late Flight Engineer Rick DeMorgan Jr have been posthumously awarded the National Emergency Medal.

“We honour their bravery and will always remember their service.
In a period of intense danger, they chose to serve.
They put themselves in harm’s way to help others.
Not for recognition, not for a medal, but because they were good people.
Brave people.
Selfless people.
They represented the very best of us.”

World's oldest astronomers reveal the ties between the stars and Indigenous narratives

Did you know the First Nations' cultures of 🇦🇺 are the world's oldest astronomers? Before the Greeks mathematically proved the 🌏 was round, Australian Indigenous stargazers had already noted that the position of the south celestial pole moved as they travelled north and south.

Now this is our kind of Mint Julep 🍹! You may know the Mint Julep as the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby 🐎, but did you know that Tim Tams 🍫🍪 were named from this very same race? The famous Aussie biscuit was named by Ross Arnott, who attended the 1958 Kentucky Derby and decided that the name of the winning horse, Tim Tam, was perfect for a planned new line of biscuits!

World Immunisation Week is an important reminder that vaccines are a critical tool in the battle against COVID-19. Widespread immunisation coverage will assist countries to reopen and ensure stability.
Australia is supporting our partners in the Pacific and Southeast Asia with a $623 million commitment to access and deliver COVID-19 vaccines, through our Regional Vaccine Access and Health Security Initiative.
This is on top of our $80 million commitment to the COVAX AMC for developing countries, which aims to provide vaccine coverage for up to 20% of the populations of 92 developing countries by the end of 2021.
We're all in this together.
