The Australian Government will provide additional support to the most vulnerable Australian citizens whose return to Australia has been impacted by the restrictions arising from COVID-19.
Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon Marise Payne set out the key elements of this support on 2 September 2020, see: https://www.foreignminister.gov.au/minister/marise-payne/media-release/helping-australians-overseas.

In summary, if you’ve been unable to return to Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions and you are experiencing financial distress, you may be eligible for a one-off emergency loan to support your living costs while you wait for a flight to Australia and/or to help cover the cost of the flight.

The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra is administering the Hardship Program with emergency assistance. These emergency loans are only available as a last-resort. Applicants will have to meet strict eligibility criteria and must be intending to return to Australia as soon as a flight is available. Further information on the loans, eligibility and the application process can be found via smartraveller.gov.au: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/news-and-updates/overseas-financial-assistance

Two types of loans are available:
👉 emergency repatriation loans to help cover the costs of return flights to Australia, where available
👉 emergency living costs loans for Australians who are unable to return as quickly as they would like.

This support is intended to assist the most vulnerable Australian citizens overseas, who are in financial distress due to COVID-19, to:
👉 purchase return flights to Australia where this is possible, including where prices have increased
👉 shelter in place, including to cover the cost of safe, temporary accommodation
👉 and ensure access to medication and other essentials.

Australians overseas in need of consular assistance can register with DFAT via covid19.dfat.gov.au. Please note that registering with DFAT does not mean that you will automatically be considered for financial assistance. We encourage those seeking to return to Australia to remain in regular contact with their airlines or travel agents to confirm their arrangements.

September Flight ✈ Update: Short term availability is very limited and some airlines are no longer accepting new bookings to Australia. There are no plans for government-facilitated flights from the United States, as regular commercial options are still available.
We recognise that caps on international passenger arrivals into Australia are making it increasingly harder for Australians to get home. Any updates on these restrictions will be posted as soon as we have them, here and on our Twitter page (@ausintheus).
We appreciate that this is a difficult and stressful situation for you and your family.

➡️ If you need emergency consular assistance you can call our 24/7 Consular Emergency Centre + 61 2 6261 3305. For non-urgent enquiries, email [email protected].

➡️ For further advice for Australians, see smartraveller.gov.au: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/news-and-updates/covid-19-cant-get-home.

On this day, in 1951, Australia 🇦🇺, New Zealand 🇳🇿 and the United States 🇺🇸 signed the ANZUS mutual defense treaty. More than 60 years later, the Treaty remains the foundation of our security relationship with the United States. The mutual defence clause of the ANZUS treaty was invoked by Australia for the first time in 2001, after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Australia remains a strong ally and coalition partner with the United States in global efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism. #USwithAus #mateship

To Rushfield's defense, he said the word "EE-mooh" was listed as a standard US pronunciation in reference works such as the Merriam-Webster and Oxford English dictionaries. So, we want to know, how do you pronounce the word? 🤔

Australian caviar, aka finger limes, could save the American citrus industry! 🍋🍊 Citrus greening, also called huanglongbing or HLB, causes fruit to turn bitter and green, and kills trees if left unchecked for too long. This has upended the citrus-growing industry in Florida and put other American citrus producers on high alert. The good news is that researchers may have found a solution using the Australian finger lime. These pickle-shaped fruits full of caviar-like beads of juice, are immune to citrus greening and hold a protein that fights the bacteria directly.

The best thing? The public program is mostly free, and if you do buy artwork or pay a program fee, all proceeds go back to Indigenous communities.
