In the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, two scientists made medical history. Through their Mainz-based company BioNTech, Özlem Türeci and Uğur Şahin developed the world's first effective COVID-19 vaccine in 2020—a scientific breakthrough and a decisive step in the global fight against the pandemic.
But the story doesn't end there. mRNA research continues to advance, paving the way for new therapies, including promising treatments for cancer, built on this groundbreaking innovation.
Cutting-edge research from Germany. A global impact.

What if we told you that contact lenses are more than 500 years old? Well—not quite. But as early as 1508, Leonardo da Vinci sketched the first concept for contact lenses. Although da Vinci did not invent contact lenses, his drawings showed that human vision could be altered by bringing the cornea into direct contact with water.
It wasn't until 1888 that German scientist Dr. Adolf Fick invented the first practical contact lenses, using blown glass. However, these early lenses had several major drawbacks: they were thick, heavy, and covered the entire eye, preventing oxygen from reaching the cornea. As a result, they became known as "hard lenses."
Since then, contact lenses have evolved dramatically. Today's lenses are made from advanced plastics that are lightweight, comfortable, and highly breathable.

It's never easy to say goodbye. For diplomats, the assignments usually last just four years—and before you know it, it's time for the next adventure.
In four years, you get to know a place remarkably well. So it's no surprise that Markus fondly remembers Huckleberry Finn, "Sweetheart," and German heritage. Listen to him if you want to know what "Texas in the man" is all about!
Markus, thank you for your outstanding work, your infectious sense of humor, and your truly unmatched soccer knowledge. You have left your mark on our team and on our community.
We wish you all the very best for your next chapter!
