Heidi’s Journey at IFRM
At the Idaho Falls Rescue Mission (IFRM), we believe meaningful change happens when compassionate people step forward to serve. This year, we were honored to welcome Idaho State University social work practicum student Heidi Funnel as she completed her second-year Social Work practicum with us.
What began as volunteering in October 2025 quickly grew into something more. Heidi’s compassion, dedication, and heart for advocacy helped strengthen IFRM’s role as a practicum site for future social work students.
As part of her degree program, Heidi completed 400 practicum hours alongside our case management team, gaining hands-on experience working with individuals and families facing difficult circumstances. She assisted with guest assessments, case plans, program enrollments, case notes, and connecting guests with community resources — all while developing the empathy, communication, and ethical practices essential to social work.
But more importantly, Heidi became part of the IFRM family.
“I never felt like I was ‘just an intern’ — I always felt like I was a valuable member of the team,” Heidi shared. “This experience has been very valuable to me, and I feel prepared to take the next steps in my career because of my time here.”
Because Heidi first served as a volunteer, she already understood the heart of our mission: treating every guest with dignity, respect, and encouragement. Throughout her practicum, she grew in confidence, advocacy, and client-centered care, leaving a lasting impact on both staff and guests.
Heidi’s story is a reminder that internships and practicums are more than educational requirements — they are opportunities to grow, serve, and make a real difference in the lives of others.
IFRM is grateful to partner with students who are passionate about serving the community, and we look forward to welcoming future practicum students and interns who want hands-on experience in social work, advocacy, and compassionate care.
