Who makes decisions about the issues affecting your community?

Local government is one of the levels of government Hoosiers interact with most often, but it can also be one of the easiest to misunderstand. Indiana’s laws organize local government into different structures, including cities and towns, counties, and townships. Each has its own officials, governing bodies, responsibilities, and authority under Indiana law. That means the person responsible for one community issue may not be the same person responsible for another. For example, when you have a concern about an issue in your neighborhood, it is helpful to first ask:

Where is the issue located?
What type of government is responsible?
Which official or governing body has authority over it?

Understanding these distinctions can help you move from simply having a concern to knowing where decisions are made and how to participate in the process. This post provides a general overview and is not a complete explanation of local government responsibilities. We encourage Hoosiers to conduct individual research and review Indiana law to learn more about the specific government officials and bodies responsible for issues in their community.

We deserve maps shaped by public input, not political shortcuts. Although a mid-cycle redistricting attempt was struck down in the Indiana Senate last December, the topic may return in the upcoming legislative session. Hoosiers, ensure your opposition to early redistricting is clear by signing the following petition: https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/no-midcycle-redistricting?fbclid=IwdGRjcAUHBhNjbGNrBQcEpnBkb2YBZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMzUwNjg1NTMxNzI4AAEe_zxY3hDhi9U6oZsgHlupA6uO6_9ym4KX_dR2n_na9X5Lzb7DTVNv3DdIIrA_aem_5J5NkoOHMiaIbbECPcJ1FA
