Starbase Indiana - Indianapolis

Starbase Indiana - Indianapolis A non-profit DoD program that provides STEAM hands-on education to students in the Indianapolis area.

VISION STATEMENT:
To be the premier Department of Defense youth outreach program for raising the interest in learning and improving the knowledge and skills of our nation’s youth so that we may develop a highly educated and skilled American workforce who can meet the advance technological requirements of the Department of Defense.

MISSON STATEMENT:
To expose our nation’s youth to the techno

logical environments and positive civilian and military role models found on Active, Guard, and Reserve military bases and installations, nurture a winning network of collaborators, and build mutual loyalty within our communities, by providing 25 hours of exemplary hands-on STEAM instruction and activities that meet or exceed the national standards.

Description
DoD STARBASE is a premier educational program, sponsored by the Office of the
Assistant Secretary of Defense for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. At DoD STARBASE students participate in challenging “hands-on, minds-on” activities in Science, Technology, Engineering & Art/Design, and Mathematics (STEAM). They interact with military personnel to explore careers and observe STEAM applications in the “real world.” The program provides students with 25 hours of stimulating experiences at National Guard, Marine, Air Force Reserve, Army, Air Force, and Space Force bases across the nation.

DoD STARBASE’s primary focus is the program for fifth graders. The goal is to motivate them to explore STEAM opportunities as they continue their education. The program encourages students to set goals and achieve them.
The program engages students through the inquiry-based curriculum with its “hands-on, minds-on” experiential activities. Each academy chooses a customized curriculum from a large offering of peer-reviewed learning opportunities in each STEAM area, such as: Newton’s Laws and Bernoulli’s principle, robotics, and engineering as they use the computer to design space stations, all-terrain vehicles, and submersibles. Mathematics is embedded throughout the curriculum and students use metric measurement, estimation, calculation geometry, and data analysis to solve questions. Teamwork is stressed as they work together to explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate concepts.

Military volunteers apply abstract principles to real-world situations by leading tours and giving lectures on the use of STEAM in different settings and careers. Since the academies are located in different branches of the military this experience is highly
varied. Students may discuss how chemical fires are extinguished, learn how injured are transported, or explore the cockpit of an F-18 or the interior of a submarine.

The academies work with school districts to support their standards of learning objectives.

Meredith Nicholson School 96 has been having a blast every Friday for the past three weeks here at STARBASE! 🪐

Here are some highlights of our recent hands-on STEM activities:
💡Explored energy transfer using marble runs, circuit boards, and high-tech thermal cameras
🧪Combined baking soda and vinegar during our physical and chemical changes activity to demonstrate a cool and smelly chemical reaction
💫Observed how objects with varying density arrange themselves in our density bottles after being vigorously shaken up
..and so much more!

Thanks for coming, and we are excited to see all of you next week!

Our Central Christian Academy class is full of science rockstars! Props to Mrs. Sousa for being a champ with our Van De Graaff demonstration today, even after being shocked by all 21 kids!

We had a STEM-tastic day studying fluid mechanics using our mystery density bottles, learning about electricity by creating 8 unique circuits, and designing our own adventure vehicle using the CAD software Onshape by PTC.

A full day of fun and engaging science education. What's better than that?

Tap play to watch the videos and hear the kids’ reactions—lots of "oohs" and "ahhs"—as they experience our awesome hands-on experiments!

Today, Mrs. Sousa's students from Central Christian Academy brought the energy to our classroom! We kicked off the day with exploring the properties of fluids. We dived into viscosity, surface tension, compressibility, and density.

One of the highlights of our lesson was a cool demonstration where we blew out a candle by pouring CO2 gas onto the flame.

The experiment: first, we mix a small amount of baking soda and vinegar together to create a bubbly mixture. We clamp our hand over the beaker as to not let the CO2 escape. Lastly, we gently tilt the beaker with the mixture over the candle, careful not to let any liquid fall into the candle, and watch as the flame goes out purely from the CO2 gas!

How it works: since CO2 is denser than O2, it pushes the O2 away from the flame, depriving it of the oxygen it needs to keep burning, and this results in the candle going out. It always leaves the students gasping and wondering how this happened! Plus, it’s a great way to show how gases, which are technically a type of fluid, fit into the study of fluid dynamics.

What an exciting first day here at STARBASE with Central Christian Academy! 🥳

These students are full of excitement and curiosity for STEM, and we can't wait to see all that they're capable of in these next 5 weeks. 🧪

Today we tackled the Periodic Table of Elements and built molecular models. We learned all about the metric system and practiced measuring liquid volume. Lastly, we wrapped up the day using a CAD software called Onshape by PTC. Using this program, we learned about layering in a 3D space and completed a scavenger hunt on a starship!

💫 It's always a great day to learn about science! 💫

😀We're saying goodbye to two amazing classes today from Stephen Decatur Elementary School, Mrs. Grant's and Ms. Savage's 5th grade classes! The past 5 weeks have been jam-packed with STEM activities, exploration, and plenty of laughs here at STARBASE.

🚀The students had a blast building carbon dioxide, methane, and caffeine molecular models and learning about the Periodic Table of Elements on Day 1.

🫟Our fluid mechanics lesson was full of interesting experiments! Students explored the properties of fluids and especially loved learning about viscosity on Day 3.

💫The mission launched to Mars as students designed and built a 3D model of a Mars base using the CAD software Onshape on Day 5.

We’re so proud of the curiosity, creativity, and teamwork these students showed throughout the program. We're looking forward to next year!

Today our 5th graders from Stephen Decatur Elementary School crushed our LEGO robots challenge! 🎉

We saw determination, encouragement, and teamwork as students collaborated to program their robots to travel to various locations on a huge map of Indiana.

The students got hands on coding experience as they had to troubleshoot, adapt, and test their program in the LEGO Spike App!

Can't wait to see what they are able to accomplish in the future!💡
