🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

🚒💦 Fire Service Fun Fact - The Hose Has Come a Long Way!
Did you know early fire hoses were actually made from leather? Strips of leather were sewn or riveted together to create hose capable of carrying water to a fire. Today’s fire hose uses strong synthetic materials designed to withstand high pressures, abrasion, and the tough conditions of the fireground. From leather hose to the modern attack lines and LDH we use today, the mission is still the same: get water where it needs to go!

🧯Knowledge Drop – Fire Prevention Tip: Know Your Fire Extinguisher!
Having an extinguisher is great, but knowing how and when to use it is even more important. Multipurpose ABC extinguishers are commonly used in homes and can handle ordinary combustibles, flammable liquids, and energized electrical equipment. Remember P.A.S.S.:

➡️ P — Pull the pin
➡️ A — Aim at the base of the fire
➡️ S — Squeeze the handle
➡️ S — Sweep side to side

Most importantly, extinguishers are intended for small, contained fires when you have a clear escape route. If the fire is growing, producing heavy smoke, or you aren’t sure you can safely extinguish it, GET OUT and call 911! The U.S. Fire Administration also recommends periodically checking that your extinguisher is accessible, properly pressurized, and free of damage.

👨‍🚒 Training Update: 💦 BIG HOSE, BIG WATER! This week, our members worked on large diameter hand-line deployments. Crews practiced efficiently deploying, advancing, and controlling larger hand-lines designed to deliver increased fire flow when the situation calls for BIG WATER.

Training like this builds teamwork, communication, nozzle control, and confidence so our firefighters are prepared when the tones drop. Train hard today. Be ready tomorrow.

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Service Truck 511, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

🌡️⛈️ Weather Outlook: HOT, HOT, HOT! Jacksonville is looking at another classic August week! Based on this week’s forecast, highs are expected to stay in the mid-90s Tuesday through Friday, with overnight lows in the 70s.☀️🥵

* Storm chances increase toward the end of the week, with your forecast showing about a 52% chance Friday and 58% Saturday, while Saturday’s high drops back into the upper 80s. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and keep an eye on the sky as those late-week thunderstorms develop.

🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

As we wrap up another week, we’d like to share a few highlights from around the station and some helpful safety information for our community!

🛠️ Fire Service Fun Fact - Did you know? The Halligan Bar, one of the most iconic firefighting tools, was invented in 1948 by FDNY Deputy Chief Hugh Halligan? Today it’s considered one of the most versatile forcible entry tools in the fire service, allowing firefighters to pry, twist, strike, and gain entry during emergencies when every second counts.

🏡 Knowledge Drop – Fire Prevention Tip: Keep your dryer vent clean! While many people remember to clean the lint screen after every load, the dryer exhaust vent should also be cleaned regularly. Lint buildup inside the vent restricts airflow, causes excessive heat, and can lead to a dangerous house fire. A clean vent also helps your dryer run more efficiently and can lower your energy bill.

👨‍🚒 Training Update: With this month giving us five weeks, we observed our scheduled bi-week and took a well deserved break from formal training. Rest and recovery are just as important as hands-on training, helping our volunteers recharge and return ready to continue serving our community safely and effectively.

Staying prepared means we’re ready and well rested when you need us most.

☀️ Weather Outlook: This week’s forecast for the Jacksonville area looks hot and mostly dry, with daytime highs climbing into the upper 80s to low 90s. There is still a chance of thunderstorms to start the week, so remain weather-aware Monday. As temperatures rise later in the week:

* 🌳 Take frequent breaks if working outdoors.
* 🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

⚠️ WEATHER ALERT | HEAVY RAIN & FLASH FLOODING POSSIBLE ⛈️

The National Weather Service / NOAA is advising Eastern North Carolina residents to prepare for multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms beginning tonight and continuing through Friday, with the greatest concern for heavy rainfall and flash flooding on Thursday morning into the evening.

🌧️ What to expect in our area:

* 2–3 inches of rain currently forecast around the Jacksonville area, with 3–5 inches widespread across portions of Eastern NC
* Locally higher totals of 5–8 inches are possible where heavier rain repeatedly develops
* Flash flooding may occur, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas
* Additional rain Friday could worsen flooding as soils become saturated
* Strong to severe thunderstorms are also possible in the region, with damaging winds and an isolated tornado threat

🚗 Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown! Never attempt to drive through a flooded roadway. Just 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and approximately 12 inches can carry away many passenger vehicles.

Please stay weather aware, keep phones and weather alerts enabled, and give yourself extra time if traveling during periods of heavy rainfall. Conditions can change quickly, so continue monitoring official updates from the National Weather Service.

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

🔥 Fire Service Fun Fact - Did you know? The early smoke detector: One of the earliest residential smoke detector concepts dates back to 1939? Swiss physicist Walter Jaeger was attempting to develop a sensor for poison gas when he discovered that smoke particles changed the electrical current in an ionization chamber. His unexpected discovery helped contribute to the technology that would eventually lead to modern ionization smoke detectors!

💦 Knowledge Drop: What do the Fire Hydrant colors mean?
Ever wonder why fire hydrant bonnets/caps or the band around them, may be painted different colors? Those colors can provide firefighters with valuable information about the water system and available water flow.

Under the commonly used NFPA 291 color coding system, hydrant bonnets/tops may indicate approximate available flow:
🔴 Red: Less than 500 GPM
🟠 Orange: 500–999 GPM
🟢 Green: 1,000–1,499 GPM
🔵 Light Blue: 1,500+ GPM

For firefighters, knowing available hydrant flow helps us make critical decisions about water supply, apparatus placement, and fire attack operations.

👨‍🚒 Training Update:
With several new trainees joining our ranks, this week was all about a “Rookie 101” refresher! Our members reviewed the fundamentals every firefighter needs to build a strong foundation reinforcing basic skills, expectations, equipment familiarity, and safe fireground operations.

While our newer members worked on the fundamentals, our senior firefighters sharpened their skills with Driver/Operator operations, reinforcing the knowledge and hands-on abilities needed to safely operate our apparatus and support effective fireground operations.

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Engine 504, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

⛈️ Weather Outlook: A stormy week ahead!
Jacksonville and the Half Moon area are looking at a hot and unsettled week, with highs climbing from around 90°F Monday to 93°F Wednesday, along with daily chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Thursday brings a significant increase in rain and thunderstorm chances, currently around 89% with stormy conditions potentially continuing into the weekend.

⚡Remember: When thunder roars, go indoors! Keep an eye on changing weather conditions, secure loose outdoor items if storms approach, and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

🔥 Fire Service Spotlight - National Junior Firefighter Day:
This week we proudly recognize National Junior Firefighter Day! Our Junior Firefighters represent the future of the fire service. Through dedication, training, and community service, they’re building the skills and character that will help protect our neighborhoods for years to come. Thank you to each of our Junior members for your commitment, and to the advisors who volunteer their time to mentor the next generation of firefighters!.

🌀 Knowledge Drop – Hurricane Preparedness:
Hurricane season is well underway, and now is the time to prepare, not when a storm is already approaching. Every family should have an emergency plan, know evacuation routes, assemble a disaster supply kit with several days of food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents, and keep phones and backup batteries charged. Taking a few simple steps today can make a big difference when severe weather threatens our area.

A few minutes of prevention today can help prevent a devastating fire tomorrow.

🚪 Training Update:
This week’s training focused on forcible entry operations. Members reviewed the principles, techniques, and tools used to safely gain entry into structures when every second counts. After classroom familiarization, firefighters put those skills into action by performing practical evolutions on one of our forcible entry door props, building confidence and proficiency for real-world emergencies.

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Service Truck 511, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

🌡️ Weather Outlook:
It’s going to be another hot week across Jacksonville and Onslow County, with temperatures climbing into the upper 90s by Thursday and Friday and heat index values likely exceeding 100°F. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms remain possible early and again toward the weekend. Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and remember never leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, vehicles can reach dangerous temperatures incredibly fast.

🌟 MEMBER SPOTLIGHT 🌟

Today we’re proud to shine the spotlight on Firefighter Trainee Noah Gallinea for his dedication and service with the Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department👨‍🚒🔥

Noah has proudly served with the Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department for 1 year, 5 months and has been honorably serving our country in the United States Marine Corps for the past 5 years. Thank you for your dedication both to our community and our nation!🇺🇸

When asked what he enjoys most about serving, Noah shared he loves helping the community through both their good days and their most challenging moments. Another member with a servant's heart, it is exactly what makes him such a valuable member of our department.❤️

Outside of the station, When he’s not serving, Noah enjoys working on his car and building just about anything he can dream up. 🏗️

His favorite tools on the fireground? Extrication tools, because helping rescue someone trapped when seconds matter is what it’s all about. 🛠️

Fun Fact: 🌎 Noah moved to the United States from Brazil in 2016. Ever since arriving, he wondered what it would be like to become a firefighter…. and today, he’s living that dream while serving the Half Moon community!.
