🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

🚒 Fire Service Fun Fact - A fire engine and a fire truck are not technically the same thing! An engine is primarily designed to pump water and carry hose, while a truck typically carries aerial ladders and specialized rescue equipment. Apparatus capabilities can vary between departments.

📚 Knowledge Drop – North Carolina Fire Inspectors: Fire inspectors do much more than conduct inspections. They review plans, evaluate fire protection systems, issue certain permits, investigate complaints, and educate business owners and the public. Their goal is to identify hazards and ensure compliance with the North Carolina Fire Code helping prevent fires before an emergency occurs!

🧑‍🚒 Training Update - This was a scheduled “rest week” for our members. Rest weeks provide time to recharge, spend time with family, and prepare for the next round of hands-on training all while remaining ready to answer the call.

☀️Weather Outlook: Jacksonville can expect mostly sunny skies, with temperatures gradually climbing from the low 80s into the upper 80s by Friday. Rain chances remain low for most of the week, with a slightly better chance of showers arriving Saturday. Stay hydrated and enjoy the warm fall weather safely!

🚗👶 Child Passenger Safety Week 👶🚗

Every trip—whether across town or just around the corner starts with making sure our youngest passengers are properly secured.

Take a few moments this week to:

✅ Choose the correct car seat for your child’s age, height, and weight
✅ Make sure the seat is installed tightly and correctly
✅ Check that the harness is snug and properly positioned
✅ Replace any car seat that is expired, damaged, or has been involved in a crash

Car seats save lives but only when they are selected, installed, and used correctly. Let’s work together to keep Half Moon’s smallest residents safe on every ride!

🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

📚 Fire Service Fun Fact - The emergency term “Mayday” comes from the French phrase m’aider, meaning “help me.” In the fire service, a Mayday is declared whenever a firefighter becomes lost, trapped, injured, or faces another life-threatening emergency.

👶 Knowledge Drop – Child Passenger Safety Week (9/20-9/26): The right car seat can save a child’s life, but it must be appropriate for the child’s age, height & weight, and installed correctly. Keep children rear-facing for as long as their car seat allows, secure the harness snugly, and always check the manufacturer’s instructions. If you are unsure about your installation, have it inspected by a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.

🧑‍🚒 Training Update - This week, our members worked on Mayday and downed-firefighter survival procedures. Firefighters practiced recognizing dangerous situations, communicating a Mayday, self-rescue techniques, and assisting a firefighter in distress. These skills prepare our crews to respond quickly when every second matters.

Simultaneously we participated in water supply operations training with Richlands VFD

We also had the privilege of visiting with our friends at Living Water Christian School this week for some fire prevention and water fun!

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Engine 504, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

⛈️ Weather Outlook: Jacksonville starts the week hot, with Monday reaching around 89°F. Storm chances increase Tuesday through Thursday, followed by cooler and drier conditions Friday and Saturday. Stay weather-aware during the middle of the week, and remember: when thunder roars, go indoors!

🌛Half Moon VFD – Week in review 📆

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

📚 Fire Service Fun Fact: The extended brim on the back of a traditional fire helmet was designed to help direct hot water, rain, and falling debris away from a firefighter’s neck and down the outside of their protective coat. This practical feature helped shape the iconic fire helmet design still recognized today!

👨‍🚒 Knowledge Drop – Structure Fire Turnout Gear: Turnout gear is designed with multiple protective layers that help shield firefighters from heat, flames, sharp objects, and hazardous contaminants. However, it does not make a firefighter fireproof. Extreme temperatures can quickly pe*****te the gear, and firefighters can still experience burns, heat exhaustion, and other injuries. Proper inspection, cleaning, and wearing of every component are critical, especially because smoke and soot may contain cancer-causing contaminants.

🎓 Training Update - Fire Prevention & Fire Life Safety Education Procedures: This week, our members worked on reviewing effective ways to communicate important safety information, conduct public education activities, and help members of our community better understand how to prevent fires and respond safely during emergencies. Prevention and education are two of the most valuable tools in protecting lives and property!

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Rescue/Service Truck 511, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

☀️Weather Outlook: Jacksonville and the surrounding area can expect a mostly sunny and increasingly warm week, with afternoon temperatures climbing from the mid-80s into the lower 90s by Friday. A chance of showers returns Saturday. Stay hydrated while working outdoors, take frequent breaks, and keep an eye on the forecast as the weekend approaches!

🇺🇸 September 11 — We Will Never Forget 🇺🇸

Today, the Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001 including the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while courageously answering the call.

We honor the first responders, service members, survivors, families, and countless heroes whose lives were forever changed that day. May we continue to carry forward the courage, unity, and selfless service shown in our nation’s darkest hours.

Gone, but never forgotten. 🇺🇸

Another strong and productive week serving our community, sharpening our skills, maintaining our equipment, and sharing important safety information. Here’s a quick look at what’s been happening around the station this week:

☎️🔔 Fire Service Fun Fact - Before modern radios, fire departments often used bells, whistles, and coded alarm signals to communicate. Today, clear radio traffic and an organized command structure are essential for safely coordinating crews during an emergency.

🍳🔥Knowledge Drop – Kitchen Fire Safety:
Cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires. Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or cooking at high temperatures, keep anything flammable away from the stovetop, and turn pot handles inward. If a small grease fire starts, never use water, turn off the heat and carefully cover the pan with a lid if it is safe to do so. When in doubt, get everyone outside and call 911!

👨‍🚒🧯Training Update - Command and Control Procedures: This week we reviewed incident command responsibilities, radio communications, crew accountability, resource coordination, and maintaining control of an emergency scene. Strong leadership and clear communication help ensure that everyone works toward the same goal protecting lives, property, and one another.

Additionally, we completed a thorough inspection and operational check on Tanker 507, Brush Truck 510, and Squad 514, ensuring the apparatus and equipment remain ready to respond when our community needs us most.

🌤️⛈️Weather Outlook: Jacksonville can expect mostly sunny conditions through the middle of the week, with highs climbing from the upper 80s to the low 90s. Rain and thunderstorms become more likely Friday and Saturday.

Today, we honor the hardworking men and women who help build, serve, and strengthen our community every day.

To our Half Moon community, thank you for your hard work, your continued support, and most importantly, for trusting us to protect your families, homes, and neighbors. For more than six decades, it has been our privilege to answer the call when you need us most and that is a responsibility we never take for granted.

From our firehouse family to yours, we wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved Labor Day! ❤️🤍💙

📅 This Day in History ~ Sep 03, 1666

🔥On September 3, 1666, the Great Fire of London continued to rage through the city after beginning the previous day in a bakery on Pudding Lane.

With strong winds, tightly packed wooden buildings, and no organized municipal fire department like we know today, the fire spread rapidly. By September 3, firefighting efforts were becoming more organized, with designated “fire posts” established throughout the city and crews working to create firebreaks by removing buildings in the fire’s path.

⛪️The Great Fire would ultimately burn for several days, destroying more than 13,000 homes and 80 churches and forever changing the way cities thought about construction, fire prevention, and organized firefighting.

💡More than 350 years later, the basic lesson remains the same: prevention, preparedness, organization, and early action save lives and property.

At Half Moon Volunteer Fire Department, we’re proud to continue a fire service tradition that has evolved tremendously over the centuries, neighbors answering the call to protect neighbors. 🚒
