Childcare isn’t just a family issue—it’s critical workforce infrastructure 💼

We have some exciting news for Juneau! Thanks to strong advocacy from the local business community, the Juneau Assembly officially approved $270,000 in vital funding for the Southeast Childhood Collective to stabilize and expand local summer childcare.

But the work doesn’t stop there. The Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce is continuing to stand with the Collective by backing new state-level grant applications. These grants will help launch a childcare apprenticeship program and create dedicated care for our healthcare heroes at Bartlett Regional Hospital.

When we invest in childcare, we keep parents working, businesses thriving, and our economy moving forward.

The hot topic of the day was Alaska’s Ballot Measure 1—which brought massive changes to state labor laws following its implementation. Janelle broke down how these changes are playing out in real-time, including:

📈 Minimum Wage & Salary Exempt Thresholds: Navigating the step-up minimum wage increases (hitting $14.00/hr as of July 1, 2026) and the corresponding rise in the salary exempt threshold to $1,120/week ($58,240/year).

🩺 Paid Sick Leave Nuances: Handling the 1 hour per 30 hours worked accrual system, mandatory carry-overs, and how existing PTO programs fit into compliance.

👥 Exemptions & Classifications: Identifying who is exempt (like certain minors and seasonal non-profit workers) and ensuring accurate wage-and-hour classifications.

⚖️ Department of Labor Activity: Keeping up with enforcement trends and avoiding common payroll and tax pitfalls before year-end.
