Last week, we were honored to host the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Juneau Media Center. This week, we are celebrating them on the podcast!

In the latest episode, we were thrilled to welcome Lisa Dumas, co-owner of the Juneau Radio Center, for a remarkably candid and inspiring conversation. Learn what ultimately brought her from the major broadcasting markets of Toronto and San Diego to the helm of a local radio station here in Alaska.

Lisa opens up about her incredible career trajectory, sharing behind-the-scenes moments from her time as a top-market country music host—including the nerve-wracking day her entire management team crashed a highly anticipated one-on-one interview with Shania Twain.

Whether you are curious about the inner workings of the broadcasting industry, seeking advice on navigating a high-pressure career while managing your mental health, or just want to learn how to get involved in your local community, this episode is full of genuine wisdom.

We’ll be releasing our interview with Cliff Dumas over the weekend. More to come!

Do you know about the Red Dog Saloon's wild legacy? Listen to the debut episode of our new podcast, Business Voices, titled "Sawdust, Stories and Staying Power: The Red Dog Saloon’s Place in Juneau."

Executive Director Rebecca Parks interviews Eric Forst, owner of the iconic Red Dog Saloon. This episode dives deep into the fascinating, resilient, and quirky history of a business that has weathered changing times, location moves, and the explosive growth of Juneau's cruise ship industry.

Eric shares incredible stories about a legendary 1950s piano player who rocked a silver dollar halter top, explains why he fiercely protects his saloon's "old-school" human connection from modern table-side technology, and reveals the crucial lessons he’s learned about building a powerhouse team.

This conversation is packed with gold. Discover Juneau's history and gain insights into local entrepreneurship.

Earlier this month, representatives from Huna Totem Corporation tourism gave an update on tourism operations across Alaska, including growth at Icy Strait Point and progress on the proposed Aak’w Landing development in Juneau.

Huna Totem currently employs 600 people statewide, with approximately 350 in Hoonah. Icy Strait Point is expected to welcome over 700,000 cruise passengers in 2026. Since 2004, this cruise port has contributed more than $125 million to local communities through wages, taxes, and investment. Huna Totem leadership emphasized balancing tourism growth with cultural stewardship, local hiring, and community partnerships.

They also gave updates on the Aak’w Landing development in Juneau. The tidelands lease for the dock project was officially signed in April 2026. The current estimated project cost is approximately $150 million, with construction targeted for 2027–2028. This development is intended to reduce downtown congestion, improve waterfront access, and expand public space along the seawalk.

The project includes plans for shore power infrastructure to lower emissions from ships at the dock. The Chamber is proud to support this responsible expansion of Juneau's tourism opportunities.

May is Mining Month! ⛏️👷‍♀️

May is recognized as Mining Month in Alaska—a time to highlight the important role mining plays in our local economy and community. Here in Juneau, both Coeur Alaska Kensington Mine and Hecla Greens Creek Mine are doing fantastic work, not only as major employers but as active community partners.

Kensington mine employees and contractors recently raised more than $34,000 through their annual silent auction to support Juneau Schools Endowment Fund, managed by the Juneau Community Foundation. These funds help provide extracurricular and enrichment opportunities for local K-12 students, demonstrating a strong commitment to investing in Juneau's future.

As part of Mining Month, the American Exploration & Mining Association (AEMA) recently released a video compilation featuring footage from Hecla’s Greens Creek operation and the surrounding community. Filmed last summer, it highlights the people, innovation, and responsibility behind modern mining in Southeast Alaska.

Don’t forget—both mines will be joining us on May 28 for an update at our Chamber luncheon. Register here:

Yesterday, Juneau Chamber of Commerce President Corey Baxter and board members Drew Green and Laura McDonnell joined community members and CBJ representatives to welcome the Star Princess as she docked in Juneau for the very first time — marking the first LNG-powered cruise ship to call in Juneau.

As part of the longstanding maritime tradition of a plaque exchange commemorating a ship’s inaugural visit to port, the Chamber’s signature gold pan was proudly presented on behalf of the Juneau community. We are proud to support the visitor industry in Juneau and celebrate the innovation, investment, and opportunity that tourism continues to bring to our community and our economy.
