Thank you to Goldbelt, Inc. for hosting a food drive for the month of September and making a donation to support families across Southeast Alaska!

September is Hunger Action Month, and National Food Bank Day is this Friday, September 4th. For us, that makes now the perfect moment to talk about something we see every week.

Hunger is closer to home than many people realize.

Throughout Southeast Alaska, hundreds of families, seniors, and kids turn to our pantry and to our member agencies to get through tight stretches. The good news is that getting involved is simple. You can donate, volunteer a few hours, or just spread the word so a neighbor knows we are here.

Exciting news: we are giving our website a refresh to make hours, services, and contact details easier to find!

While a few pages are being updated and will change over the next few months, nothing about our day-to-day has changed. Our public pantry is still open to everyone on Thursdays from 3:00 to 5:30 pm, and our team is here Monday through Thursday for donations and member agencies.

If you ever cannot find what you need on the site, just reach out. Call us at (907) 789-6184 and we will get you the answer right away.

A big thank you to the Juneau Community Garden for the beautiful produce that has been arriving all summer! Joel stops by regularly to drop off kale, carrots, and other fresh veggies. These donations of locally grown food help us provide fresh produce alongside pantry staples.

Feeding our neighbors is a community effort, so we are so thankful for the support of groups like the Juneau Community Garden. If you have any local, uncut produce that you are interested in donating, we are always happy to receive and distribute it. We can accept fresh food donations 8 AM - 4 PM, Monday - Thursday.

After consulting the city and out of an abundance of caution, the Southeast Alaska Food Bank (SEAFB) will be closed the remainder of today (August 13th) due to peak glacial lake outburst flooding. There will be no public pantry this afternoon. There will be no TEFAP distribution this afternoon.

SEAFB intends to be back to normal operations next week.

If you are in need of immediate food assistance, please:
1. Consider visiting SEAFB tomorrow morning (Friday, August 14th) from 9:30-11:00 AM for a limited food distribution, as long as conditions allow. We will post an update tomorrow morning if there are any changes to this plan.
2. Visit your nearest public pantry this week. See a full pantry list at: https://www.seafb.org/schedules/
3. Contact one of the following organizations for a pre-packed box of shelf-stable emergency food:
- Gastineau Human Services at (907) 780-3020
- Chapel by the Lake
- Auke Bay Bible Church
- First Baptist Church Juneau
- Salvation Army- providing food services at Floyd Dryden until after the flooding event.

As the season for glacial outburst flooding returns to the Mendenhall Valley, we want our neighbors to know that we are here and ready.

We have reinforced our sandbag walls, moved food off of low shelves, and made plans for flood response. Additionally, SEAFB participates in the Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). Alongside our partners, we are ready to distribute food to those impacted if needed.

If you live in the valley, please check if you live in an evacuation-recommended area, make a plan for your household, and stay away from the flood barriers (especially during the flood). Partner agencies, reach out early if you expect heavier demand during any disruption. And if your own household could use support this month, please do not wait to ask.

Volunteer sign-up is now open for this year's glacial outburst flooding preparation and response. There are no immediate needs right now, but we will reach out to volunteers as needs arise. This same form can also be used to request help.

Do you know about TEFAP? The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program, administered in Alaska through the State Department of Education & Early Development in partnership with Food Bank of Alaska, that provides emergency food at no cost to eligible low-income individuals and families. In turn, the Food Bank of Alaska helps partners (like us) to distribute food to our neighbors in communities across Alaska. You may qualify based on household income and/or participation in programs such as SNAP, TANF, SSI, CSFP, or free/reduced lunch programs.

Planning to attend the 4th of July parade? Stop by the Juneau-Gastineau and Glacier Valley Rotary Club's free pancake feed to support the Southeast Alaska Food Bank. They will be serving pancakes outside of the JACC from 8:30-10:30 AM, or until food runs out.
