As the season for glacial outburst flooding returns to the Mendenhall Valley, we want our neighbors to know that we are here and ready.

We have reinforced our sandbag walls, moved food off of low shelves, and made plans for flood response. Additionally, SEAFB participates in the Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). Alongside our partners, we are ready to distribute food to those impacted if needed.

If you live in the valley, please check if you live in an evacuation-recommended area, make a plan for your household, and stay away from the flood barriers (especially during the flood). Check the CBJ Flood Response Page for more information and updates: https://juneau.org/emergency/emergency-flood-response

Partner agencies, reach out early if you expect heavier demand during any disruption. And if your own household could use support this month, please do not wait to ask.

Volunteer sign-up is now open for this year's glacial outburst flooding preparation and response. There are no immediate needs right now, but we will reach out to volunteers as needs arise. This same form can also be used to request help.

Do you know about TEFAP? The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) is a federal program, administered in Alaska through the State Department of Education & Early Development in partnership with Food Bank of Alaska, that provides emergency food at no cost to eligible low-income individuals and families. In turn, the Food Bank of Alaska helps partners (like us) to distribute food to our neighbors in communities across Alaska. You may qualify based on household income and/or participation in programs such as SNAP, TANF, SSI, CSFP, or free/reduced lunch programs.

To learn more about eligibility and available assistance, visit www.seafb.org or call 907-789-6184.

Last week, two volunteer groups gave their time to help with some projects at SEAFB. On Tuesday, a youth group from the LDS Auke Bay Ward sorted non-perishable food boxes. On Wednesday, the staff at Perseverance Theatre sorted boxes of frozen food. Thank you, Auke Bay Ward and Perseverance Theatre for helping us feed our neighbors!

Fighting hunger takes community commitment, and volunteer groups make the work of the Southeast Alaska Food Bank possible. If you are interested in group volunteer opportunities, you can reach out to us at 907-789-6184 or contact our Programs Manager at: [email protected].

Juneteenth recognizes the day, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that the Civil War was over and they were free. This Juneteenth, we reflect on the importance of freedom, dignity, opportunity, and community care for all. At the Southeast Alaska Food Bank, we believe everyone deserves access to nutritious, culturally-relevant foods and the resources needed to care for their families. After all, beyond fueling our bodies, food connects us to community, traditions, and legacies of resilience.

The Rotary Food Drive is happening on Saturday, June 13th at Safeway and Fred Meyer!

Help further our mission of connecting neighbors with nutritious food by bringing nonperishable food items from home or purchasing extra groceries while shopping to donate on-site.

Items like canned meat, canned fruit, shelf-stable milk, cereal, and shelf-stable meals are always especially helpful. Every donation helps support local families across Southeast Alaska during Hunger Awareness Month and throughout the summer.

It doesn't quite feel like it, but summer is trying its best to arrive in Southeast Alaska. Our garden helps provide fresh, nutritious food for our neighbors and creates a welcoming, green space on our property. We lost our greenhouse in the big snow storm earlier this year, but we will not let that stop us from having a garden.

Volunteers, like Rob, help to make the garden possible and have been busy preparing the plots and planting seeds . We are looking forward to watching the garden blossom this summer. Thank you to the many volunteers and donors who have made it possible!

We’re incredibly grateful to Disney Cruise Line (and Mickey & Minnie Mouse) for creating such a magical day for local students at Harborview Elementary School in partnership with the Southeast Alaska Food Bank on May 15th!

Support from Disney Cruise Line has helped SEAFB to expand our services and continue to feed kids in the community. Partnerships like these support our mission of connecting neighbors with nutritious food and help us show up for families across Southeast Alaska.
