In his address to UAS’s Graduating Class of 2026 at Juneau Commencement, President of the UAS Alumni Association Greg Lange shared the following advice to our new graduates:

“Though your days as a UAS student have come to a close, your connection to this place—and to the people who shaped it with you—is just beginning as a member of our alumni community. With that comes the memories of your unforgettable time here, and a lasting bond you share with those sitting with you today, as well as to those who came before you. Please partake in the numerous events to keep you connected to our University: Trivia Nights, meet-ups at local establishments, networking events and ongoing career services through Handshake are a few examples….Who knows; perhaps you’d like to have a seat on our Board in the near future, to continue to shape our pathway forward.

Congratulations on reaching the finish line, whether it be your last one, or on to your next one. Enjoy today and the accomplishments that got you here. We will be in contact with you soon; until then, welcome to the club…”

University of Alaska Board of Regents selected Former UA General Counsel Matthew Cooper as UA System's 18th President. President-Designee Cooper's first day as UA President will be August 3rd, 2026.

"I am excited and humbled to return to the University of Alaska, and I am grateful to the Board and search committee for this opportunity," President-Designee Cooper said. "I’ve seen firsthand how UA empowers our communities and state, and I believe strongly that the future on our horizon is bright. I look forward to building on the strong foundation President Pitney has established, and to working with the Board and university leadership and governance to support and advance the university's long-term vision and goals."

Former UA President Pat Pitney was named president in 2022 and was the first woman to serve as a permanent president. Under her leadership, UA saw a reversal in enrollment decline, improved competitive research standing, and a stronger connection to Alaska's workforce.

More information about President-Designee Cooper and the leadership transition is available here:

“More Alaskan students in higher education means Alaskan employers can hire people who understand us and our cultures. University of Alaska graduates know the realities of life in our communities. Workers who understand both the opportunities and the challenges of Alaska's geography, economy, and way of life make our workforce stronger and our problem-solving better rooted in what Alaska communities need.”

THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATIONS OF UAS, UAA, and UAF collaborated on an Op-Ed for Senior Voice Alaska on the University of Alaska (UA) system’s impact on Alaskan communities. Read more below:

For generations, the University of Alaska (UA) has helped shape the people and professions that keep Alaska going. Our graduates are working in nearly every part of our state, in hospitals and clinics, classrooms and businesses, nonprofits and public offices and the industries that drive Alaska's ec...
