“UAS is so embedded in community,” University of Alaska Southeast alum Ryan Hamilton explains as he describes the close-knit environment of UAS and the Masters in Teaching program.

“If you want to partner with educators in schools, you can’t be an outsider. You have to understand your community and what their values are…It starts with relationships and understanding people’s stories.”

Every scholarship represents more ground-breaking research, more discovery, more transformation, and more students graduating with certificates and degrees.

“Your first job as an educator is relentless positivity, relentless hope, relentless belief in young people.”

Hope for the future is exactly the type of optimism you want to hear from high school educators. But it must be more than just canned positivity. More a responsibility than simply a mindset, the optimism must be real; the hope has to feel authentic—and UAS alum Ryan Hamilton has that special type of genuine optimism in spades.

A new partnership between the Mitchell Hamline School of Law and the University of Alaska Southeast allows qualified UAS students and alumni to pursue law degrees without moving out state with a tuition scholarship of at least 50% at the law school.

“As a political scientist, I know how hard it is to get a law degree without leaving Alaska, so I am excited to help open up this access,” said Alison Staudinger, associate dean of the UAS School of Arts & Sciences. “We need people who understand our communities to stay in them, learning the legal tools to advocate for us right from home.”

Mitchell Hamline's Native American Law and Sovereignty Institute offers a specialized certificate for students interested in Native American law.
