The Kearny Police Department advises residents and motorists of temporary road closures and traffic restrictions associated with the Kearny-Belleville Elks 1050 Incredible Duck Race this Saturday.

📍 Event Location: Belgrove Dr. between Afton St. and Bergen Ave.
⏰ Event Time: 10:30 AM – 5:30 PM

🚫 ROAD CLOSURES — 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM

• Belgrove Dr. between Halstead St. and Bergen Ave.
• Afton St. between Brighton Ave. and Hillside Ave.

🚗 LOCAL TRAFFIC ONLY

• Afton St. between Passaic Ave. and Hillside Ave.
• Belgrove Dr. between Halstead St. and Afton St.

Motorists should expect delays and increased traffic in the area. Please plan alternate routes and allow additional travel time when possible.

Drivers are reminded to use caution, obey all posted traffic restrictions, and follow the directions of police officers and event traffic personnel.

📚🚔 BACK TO SCHOOL! 🎒✏️

Today marks the first day of a brand-new school year, and the Community Policing Unit is excited to welcome our students, teachers, staff, and families back to school!

Throughout the year, you’ll see our team in and around our schools, working to keep our students safe while continuing to build positive relationships with the young people in our community.

Our Community Policing Unit includes our High School School Resource Officer (Officer Miranda), Middle School School Resource Officer (Officer Aquino), Unit Sergeant (Sgt. Grimm), Special Law Enforcement Officer assigned to the High School (Officer Perez), and our L.E.A.D. Instructor (Officer Brady) who brings the Law Enforcement Against Drugs & Violence program to every 5th-grade classroom across the district, while also leading school assemblies and presentations, supporting community programs, and serving as the unit’s resident “jack of all trades.”

Whether we’re in the classroom, walking the halls, helping at arrival and dismissal, giving a presentation, attending a school event, or simply stopping by to say hello, our goal remains the same: to be a familiar, approachable, and positive presence for our students.

As everyone settles back into their routines, please remember to slow down around our schools, watch for children crossing, obey crossing guards and posted signs, and give yourself a little extra time during arrival and dismissal.

From all of us in the Kearny Police Department, we wish our students, educators, staff, and families a safe, healthy, successful, and memorable 2026–2027 school year!

As Labor Day weekend gets underway, the Kearny Police Department reminds everyone to celebrate responsibly and make safe choices on the road.

If alcohol is part of your plans, plan your ride home before the celebration begins. Designate a sober driver, use a rideshare service, or arrange another safe way home. And remember: buckle up, obey posted speed limits, put the phone down, and stay focused behind the wheel.

Drive sober or get pulled over. One decision can save a life.

UPDATE: One lane in each direction of Newark - Jersey City Turnpike is now open. You can still expect significant delays and should avoid the area.

🚨 TRAFFIC ADVISORY 🚨

Newark-Jersey City Turnpike is currently CLOSED due to flooding in the area of the post office facility at 850 Newark Jersey City Turnpike.

Motorists traveling to Jersey City should plan an alternate route.

The ramps to the Turnpike and I-280 remain accessible.

Please drive safely and avoid the area until conditions improve. Updates to follow.

Day 8 | 🚔💪

With graduation right around the corner, our cadets weren’t slowing down! Day 8 started in formation as we marched our way to Schuyler School, where members of the Kearny Fire Department were waiting for us.

Our firefighters gave the cadets an up-close look at what it takes to answer the call. They demonstrated a vehicle extrication, showing how specialized tools and techniques are used to safely remove someone from a vehicle following a serious crash. Cadets also learned about the firefighters’ gear, equipment, apparatus, and the many responsibilities they take on every day.

Then it was the cadets’ turn to get hands-on! 🔥🚒 They got behind the fire hose and put their aim to the test, knocking down cutout flames with the water stream.

After thanking our firefighters, we formed back up and marched to our home base, where a well-earned lunch was waiting for us, generously donated by ShopRite.

The afternoon brought another specialized unit to the academy as we welcomed the Jersey City Police Department Bomb Squad. Their team arrived with their specialized response vehicle, giving the cadets the opportunity to climb aboard, tour the inside, and check out the equipment used by bomb technicians. They also got an up-close look at the team’s robots and learned how technology allows officers to investigate potentially dangerous situations from a safer distance. 🤖🚔

And they weren’t done yet! The Bomb Squad introduced us to one of their specially trained K-9s, giving the cadets another look at the incredible capabilities of working police dogs through live demonstrations. 🐕‍🦺

Then came PT… and we saved our toughest session yet for Day 8. 💪 The cadets were challenged from start to finish, but they dug deep, pushed through, and finished strong. After nearly two weeks of early mornings, marching, running, PT, presentations, hands-on training, and plenty of hard work, they showed just how far they’ve come since Day 1.

Day 7 | Week 2 Continues! 🚔💪

Our cadets started the morning with some energy and teamwork, hitting the streets for a run up Beech Street while calling out cadence together. The teamwork and discipline continue to grow each day!

Our first presenters of the day were members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Unit, followed by the Kearny Police Department Traffic Unit. The cadets got an inside look at how serious motor vehicle crashes are investigated and analyzed. Working alongside our traffic officers, they took part in a hands-on accident reconstruction exercise—measuring tire marks, examining evidence, and piecing together the details to determine what happened, how it happened, and the factors that contributed to the crash.

Next, we stayed in-house as members of the Kearny Police Department Drone Unit demonstrated the capabilities of our department’s drone technology. The cadets learned how drones assist officers in a variety of situations and the responsibilities involved in operating this valuable tool.

After a busy morning, the cadets enjoyed lunch before welcoming members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. The CSI team explained their critical role in law enforcement and gave the cadets a hands-on experience with fingerprint collection and processing, allowing them to try some of the same techniques used during real investigations.

Of course, no day at the Junior Police Academy is complete without PT! The cadets pushed through another challenging session, finishing the day with a squad-versus-squad tug-of-war tournament that tested their strength, teamwork, and determination. 💪

The day didn’t end there! That evening, our cadets returned for National Night Out, where they played an important role in helping make the event a success. From assisting vendors and helping with setup to handing out ice cream and interacting with the community, our cadets stepped up and represented the academy with pride.

Another incredible day in the books. We couldn’t be prouder of the effort, teamwork, and commitment these cadets continue to show each day. 🚔

The Kearny Police Department, in coordination with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, is investigating the death of two 20-year-old males. These deaths are being investigated as suspected overdoses.

The Kearny Police Department is urgently reminding the public about the dangers of using drugs, including prescription drugs and over the counter substances, for recreational or un-prescribed purposes. Anyone wishing to discard unused medication or narcotics are encouraged to do so at the Kearny Police Department Headquarters at 237 Laurel Avenue. Surrendering these substances will NOT result in criminal charges.

Please plan accordingly and move vehicles before 4:00 PM to avoid being towed. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us keep the event safe for everyone.
