Friday, May 29, 2026 Update
Crews remained on the scene overnight patrolling for flareups and mopping up hot spots. About 4-5 acres of well-established sagebrush was burned and smoldered through the night. Continue avoiding Meals Road and Ayers Road today to give crews plenty of space for mop-up operations.

Edited to add: Daylight mapping of the fire puts it at about 105 acres.

Thursday, May 28, 2026
9:00 p.m.
Meals Road remains closed due to heavy smoke and several fire trucks and water tenders monitoring the fire.

There is a containment line around the fire. Crews are patrolling the fire line and will mopping up through the night.

More than a dozen vehicles and their crews are assisting, including BCFD2, Pasco Fire, Kennewick Fire, Franklin County Fire District 3, and deputies from the Benton County, WA Sheriff's Office.

Please avoid the area.

8:00 p.m.
Meals Road is closed at this time. Winds are pushing the fire toward Meals and Hover. Estimated acreage right now is 100-150 acres, but difficult to tell due to the thick smoke.

6:37 p.m.
We’re responding to a natural cover fire in the area of Hover Park, possibly caused by a lightning strike.

In 2025, there were 218 drone sightings over active wildfires in the United States. Most of these occurred during last year’s Eaton and Palisades Fires in Los Angeles where 184 drone incursions were reported within the restricted airspace set up around the active fires.

When unauthorized drones are sighted, the fire manager must shut down the airspace for all air operations supporting the wildland fire suppression for safety reasons. This means crucial aerial firefighting and lifesaving capabilities – like air medevac and fire suppression aircraft – can’t fly. People could die and more buildings and private and public property could burn when someone flies their unauthorized drone in restricted airspace.

6:00 p.m.
We are on the scene of a structure fire off of Game Farm Road near River View High School. Please avoid Game Farm Rd. between Finley Rd. and S. Haney Rd.

9:30 p.m. Update
Involved structures included a camper, trailer, and shed, as well as fences, and several vehicles. A single-wide mobile home, the primary residence on the property, suffered some damage. Crews had cleared the scene and were dispatched back to the address a short time later for a tree that had reignited.

Two adults, two children, and two dogs were in the home when the fire started and were able to evacuate safely when they realized there was an active fire in the front yard. Several neighbors rushed to the home with water tanks and buckets to try dousing the fire before fire crews arrived.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported. Power to the property was disconnected due to downed power lines. The family will stay with nearby relatives.

Thanks to the Benton County, WA Sheriff's Office, Kennewick Firefighters, Benton County Fire Protection District No 2, Franklin County Fire District 3, and Benton PUD for the quick response to assist.
