Weekly Wednesday Story - From a SCHAS Caregiver

I have had many clients in my 7 years at SCHAS, but one stands out as my most successful client. I trained at her house and took over going to her house. I was there twice a week and was one of the few people that she seen besides her caregiver that was there all day. I would help with a bath, making breakfast and lunch, helping with her using a bed pan and anything else I could help with when I was there. She would talk to me anytime i was there about the outside world. She had been bedridden for 6 years before I started there and was one of my clients for 15 years when she passed at the age of 94. I know if it wasnt for our services then she would not have gotten to stay home and would have ended up in the nursing home. It's the little things we do that make the biggest impact on some of our clients lives. She was just happy for me to vacuum her floor in her room and raise her blinds for her to see outside. So having a client be happy and able to stay at home until they pass was very successful to me. John M.

How can I recognize a Social Security scam?
A big part of avoiding Social Security scams is understanding how the (real) Social Security Administration operates. SSA does occasionally call people for customer service matters, or in response to a consumer request for a callback. If they call you, it’s usually about a situation you already know about; for example, you recently applied for benefits or you need to update your record. Likewise, the agency will only send you texts or emails if you have requested to receive them.

Rest assured, the Social Security Administration will never:

Threaten you with arrest, legal action, benefits suspension, or bank account seizure if you don't comply with a request
Suspend your Social Security number
Offer to shift your Social Security money to a “safer” account
Demand you make a payment immediately
Ask you for specific payment methods—such as prepaid debit cards, gift cards, online payments, mailed cash, or cryptocurrency.
Ask for personal details or banking information in exchange for giving you a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA)
Contact you via social media platforms (e.g., Facebook)
Request that you return a call to an unknown number

Another common tip-off is misspellings or grammatical errors in emails, texts, and other correspondence. If the sender’s email address looks unfamiliar, that’s another sign of fraudulent activity. Keep in mind that real SSA emails come from addresses ending in “.gov.”

Weekly Wednesday Story:

Dear Schas Family,
On behalf of Mr. Bill and his family we would like to give you a heartfelt thank you.

Thank you to Ms. Amy and Ms. Tracy, you always made sure he had a great caregiver for every single hour he was allowed, and made sure the caregiver was what he needed at his current status of health. I know that as no small feat.

Thank you to his caregivers: Lee, Taylor, and Stephanie. Even in his final days when he couldn't speak he always smiled when we told him you were coming t be with him.

Thank you for treating him with not only compassion but also the respect & dignity that he deserved.

Thank you for giving us more time just to be with him without worrying about doing the laundry, the dishes, all the housework. Instead we could focus all our energy on more quality time with him.

Thank you for being such a great care team that I knew I could take a nap, go to work and even just breathe a little easier.

In the end of his days. He was never alone. Every time he woke up a loved one, including his caregivers was right with him.

He passed away just as he wanted. He was not in pain, he was not alone, and he was given all he respect, dignity and love he deserved.

It is letters like these that make the hard work, frustration and grief all worth it.
