Here's a look at some of the rainfall totals in our area as of 2pm.

Rochester, MN has already set a new daily rainfall record for 7/31 with 2.25" and counting, surpassing the previous record for this date of 1.67" (1938).

9am | A slow-moving area of rain will continue to rotate through the region today. Overall, this should come as a nice, soaking rain for area crops and your crunchy backyard. But if any storms develop, they would have localized heavier rainfall rates (very low potential for any flooding, however).

Showers and a few storms move through the region today, bringing heavy rainfall at times. The heaviest rainfall is expected through 3 PM, but rain will linger into tonight. Those along and south of I-90 are most at risk for heavy rain with general amounts of 1-3 inches and a 10-30% chance for 4+ inches in parts of northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and southwest Wisconsin. Ponding of water in low-lying areas and urban street flooding are possible where showers/storms frequent.

While it may not seem like it, both La Crosse and Rochester will see one of their 20 wettest Julys. Coming into the last day of month, Rochester is the 12th wettest (6.49") and La Crosse is the 18th wettest (6.57").

Periods of heavy rainfall will accompany showers and storms on Friday. The heaviest amounts are favored west of the Mississippi River where 1 to 3 inches of rain may fall. Be sure to stay up to date on the forecast as the axis of heaviest rain may still shift!

Periods of heavy rain are expected Friday, beginning late tonight and continuing throughout the day. Areas along and south of I-90 are most at risk for heavy rainfall where amounts of 1-2+ inches are possible. Localized flooding is also possible where showers and storms frequent, though exact rainfall amounts and their locations remain difficult to pin down.

Warm and primarily dry weather continues over the next couple of days though wildfire smoke returns to the region. Rain chances increase Friday, resulting in temperatures falling into the low to mid 70s. Rain amounts of 1 inch or more are possible (30-50%) Friday, but where the heaviest rain falls is uncertain. Rain departs by Saturday afternoon, allowing high temperatures to rebound into the low 80s through the weekend.

The other EF3 tornadoes to impact WI so far in 2026:
1) Union Center (Juneau County) - 4/14
2) Cream (Buffalo County) - 4/17
3) Ringle (Marathon County) - 4/17

The National Weather Service in Green Bay has updated the preliminary rating of the Appleton/Menasha tornado to EF3, marking the state's fourth EF3 in 2026.

This is the most tornadoes rated EF3 or greater to occur in Wisconsin since 1984. Historically, fewer than 5% of our tornadoes have ranked above EF2.

Warm and mostly dry conditions are expected through Wednesday with highs in the mid to upper 80s though a 10-15% chance for a shower/storm does exist Wednesday afternoon. Shower/storm potential increases to 50-70% late Thursday into Friday.
